Jordan, Iraq seize silvers in Arab youth competition

Jordan secured at least two silver medals while Iraq sealed one as their respective bets came out triumphant in the semifinals of the 5th Arab Youth Boxing Championships last Thursday in Cairo, Egypt.

Maher Mohamed Mashalla nabbed the first finals berth for Jordan after beating Yemen’s Aref Ahmed Geth, 4-1, in the minimumweight (48kg) division where he is set to slug it out with Egypt’s Adham Aly Hesen for the gold.

His teammate Mohamed Eshaish came through with a first round stoppage win over Algeria’s Eslam Boomra Belkadaa to arrange a bantamweight (54kg) title bout against hometown standout Abdalla Sayed Tamer.

Iraq’s lone representative Yousef Neam Elmagdy continued his winning ways at the expense of Egypt’s Mohamed Ahmed Sayed for a shot at the gold against Algeria’s Ahmed Garib in the light middleweight (71kg) class.

Meanwhile, 2022 ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships bronze winner Mahdi Mohamed Al-Matbouli (light welter-63.5kg), Omar Galeb (fly-51kg), Mohamed Khaldon Al-Hoseiny (welter-67kg), Zid Eldin Eshesh (middle-75kg) and Zeeb Ebrahiem Fadel (cruiser-86 kg) of Jordan all settled for bronze medals following their semis defeats.

Yemen, United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Lebanon bagged a bronze apiece courtesy of Geth, Mohamed Ali Khamis (minimum), Abdalla Hassan El-Badr (light heavy-80kg) and Ahmed Alzahran (super heavy-+92kg), respectively.

Saudi Arabia and Bahrain are the other Asian countries competing against North African nations including Tunisia and Morocco in the Arab youth tilt which returned after more than two years of break due to COVID-19.
