Jitpong, Volossenko, Yessenkeldi deliver golds for Asia in Bocskai tourney
Asian women boxers Jutamas Jitpong of Thailand, Rimma Volossenko and Laura Yessenkeldi of Kazakhstan captured a gold medal each in the 67th Bocskai Istvàn Memorial Tournament on Friday in Debrecen, Hungary.
IBA Women’s World Championships and ASBC Asian Elite Championships 2022 silver medalist Jitpong saved her best for last, putting up a methodical 5-0 win against Poland’s Sandra Drabik in the bantamweight (54kg) class.
Former Asian elite champion Volossenko enjoyed a walkover to the lightweight (60kg) title as EUBC European U22 winner Miroslava Jedinakova of Slovakia failed to show up in the finals.
National team newcomer Yessenkeldi made a highlight in her young career after beating England’s Hannah Robinson, 4-1, for the light welterweight (63kg) trophy.
Over at the men’s division, Kazakhstan’s reigning world champion Temirtas Zhussupov and Kyrgyzstan’s national winner Asylbek Amankul Uulu arranged an all-Asian minimumweight (48kg) finals following their dominant victories on Day 4.
World and Asian silver medalist Serik Termizhanov of Kazakhstan dictated the tempo against Uzbekistan’s Samandar Kholmurodov to notch a 4-1 win and enter the featherweight (57kg) gold medal match.
Kyrgyzstan’s three-time Asian bronze finisher and Rio Olympics flagbearer Erkin Adylbek Uulu (cruiser-86kg) as well as Uzbekistan’s Ziyovuddin Alijonov (fly-51kg) and Oybek Jurayev (bantam-54kg) also advanced to the finals of their respective weight categories.
