Japan’s 18-strong team have gold medal expectations at the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships

Japan will send 18-strong team to the upcoming ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships to Astana, Kazakhstan. The new edition of the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships will be held in Astana, Kazakhstan between October 21 and November 4 and Japan aims for medals and titles.

The 77th Japan Inter-High School National Boxing Championships was their last selection competition which took place in the Kita Gas Arena in Sapporo, Hokkaido a few weeks ago.

Their best high school boxers from all regions of Japan competed in the traditional event in Sapporo where 317 bouts were held in six sessions. The Kokoku High School won the team rankings at the Inter-High School National Boxing Championships and defended their throne after the 2022 edition.

Japan had to miss the 2021 and the 2022 editions of the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships but their talents are ready to return to the event after four years of break. Japan impressed in both of the 2019 ASBC Asian Youth and Asian Junior Boxing Championships in Ulaanbaatar and in Fujairah.

Japan earned one gold and two bronze medals in the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships in La Nucia, Spain which was their last result in the age group.

Seven Japanese junior boxers will join the competition and all of them are newcomers in the international stage. Their youth team will consist eleven boxers but many of them already competed out of Japan in the previous period. Among the eighteen boxers, seven will represent Japan in the women’s part of the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships

Miyu Suzuki is the most experienced boxer in their women’s youth national team who earned a bronze medal at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships. Korin Kokofu is another key boxer in this age group, she won all of her national competitions in the previous two years and she represented Japan in La Nucia last November.

Fukuoka’s 17-year-old Seiya Nakayama moved up one category this year but he won his national events with excellent performance and he could be one of their male stars in Astana. Raito Kataoka, Koichi Nakayama, Akito Horie, Masatake Yoshizumi and Moeto Kawamura all have the experience to earn medals in the men’s youth part of the competition.
