Ishara Thushari Perera was named as the Best Boxer at the Sri Lankan Women’s National Championships
Sri Lanka’s first event of the year, the women’s finals of the National Championships featured in the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo. Sri Lanka’s most experienced female boxers such as R.A. Nadeeja Pushpakumari, Lokuge Ishara Nishadi Malshani, K.K. Ishara Thushari Perera and Muthuthanthri Pathabendige Sajeewani Cooray all won their gold medals.
This was the 96th edition of the Sri Lankan National Championships, and the country has long traditions in our sport since the 1920s. One of the IBA Board of Directors, the President of the Boxing Association of Sri Lanka, Mr. Dian Gomes and the Secretary to the Ministry of Defence and the State Ministry of National Security General Mr. Kamal Gunaratne were also followed the finals of the event.
Altogether 44 girls participated for the 12 available titles from the minimumweight (48kg) up to the heavyweight (+81kg) in the National Championships. The Air Force won the Nieva Embuldeniya Challenge Trophy as the best team of the competition with their five gold medals ahead of the Army Boxing Club and the Police BC.
R.A. Nadeeja Pushpakumari is one of their national team members who stopped A.M.D.K. Aththanayaka at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) final.
The Asian U22 bronze medallist Lokuge Ishara Nishadi Malshani represented Sri Lanka in several international competitions and the young bantamweight (54kg) hope defeated K.L. Sadareka in the final of the national event.
K.K. Ishara Thushari Perera represented the Air Force in this National Championships and she became the Best Female Boxer of the event following her fantastic performance at the featherweight (57kg) final against M.D.P. Manathunga.
Muthuthanthri Pathabendige Sajeewani Cooray represented the country in the last edition of the Commonwealth Games and she is one of their most experienced girls in Sri Lanka’s women boxing life. The 34-year-old boxer dominated the lightweight (60kg) in Colombo as in all of her previous national events and she defeated a promising boxer, M.G.M.T. Dasunika in the final of the Championships.
W.W.A.K. Thiwanka claimed a silver medal in the 2020 edition of the National Championships which she switched into gold at the welterweight (66kg) this time. One of the veterans, Vidhushika Prabadi returned to the competitions and she earned the gold medal of the heavyweight (+81kg) in Colombo.
