Irish legend Bernard Dunne joins Indian boxing team as high performance director

Aiming to win medals in the 2024 Paris Olympics, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) led by president Mr. Ajay Singh has hired Irish legend Mr. Bernard Dunne as its new high performance director.

Dunne, a former professional world and European champion, was at the forefront of Ireland’s success in amateur boxing in the past five years.

With Dunne serving in the same position in the Irish Amateur Boxing Association, Kellie Harrington became a world champion in 2018 and an Olympic gold medalist in Tokyo three years later.

The 13-time Irish national champ also steered Amy Broadhurst and Lisa O’Rourke to titles in the AIBA Women’s World Championships 2022 as well as Aidan Walsh to a bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics.

Singh and the IBF are hoping that the arrival of the 42-year-old Dunne will help sustain the Indian national boxing team’s recent rise and eventually achieve their goal of bagging medals in the next Summer Games in Paris.

India ruled the AIBA Youth World Championships 2021 in Kielce, Poland with eight golds and three bronzes. The Indian youth boxers are eager to defend their overall title in the upcoming edition in La Nucia, Spain next month.

India also impressed in the latest Women’s World Championships, ASBC Asian Elite Championships, Commonwealth Games and South Asian Games.

The top Indian pugilists will join the Asian elite meet set to start later this month in Amman, Jordan, with the target of surpassing their 2-5-8 gold-silver-bronze haul from the previous edition.
