India’s Panghal, Kumar, Hussamudin and Pakistan’s Hussain enter Commonwealth Games quarters

National stars Amit Panghal, Ashish Kumar and Mohammed Hussamudin of India as well as Ilyas Hussain of Pakistan subdued separate foes to barge into the quarterfinals of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England.

The 26-year-old Panghal, the reigning Asian Games champion, an ASBC Asian Elite gold winner and an AIBA World Championships silver finisher in 2019, easily landed his punches against the younger Namri Berri of Vanuatu to score a one-sided 5-0 victory in the men’s flyweight (51kg) division.

“I worked hard in the recent three months to be in top shape in this Commonwealth Games. My opponent was not a top one today but I kept full concentration and I tried several different tactics and techniques during the contest,” said the 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist.

Panghal’s teammates Kumar and Hussamudin also drubbed their respective opponents to inch closer to a podium finish.

Asian Elite silver winner Kumar trounced Travis Tapatuetoa of Niue, 5-0, in the light heavyweight (80kg) category while previous Commonwealth Games bronze finisher Hussamudin tallied the same scoreline over Mohamed Salim Hossain of Bangladesh in the featherweight (57kg) class.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s rising star and two-time national champ Hussain edged out Anthony Shawn Joseph of Trinidad and Tobago via a 3-2 split decision in a tight featherweight bout to secure his place in the last eight.

Besides Pakistan and India, the other Asian countries competing in the 22nd edition of the quadrennial meet are Bangladesh, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
