India’s No.1, Amit Panghal enjoyed his return to the international stage in Phuket and will be in action at the Thailand Open on Friday

Four competition days are finalized at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Phuket where plenty of the boxers returned to the events after the Covid-19 restrictions. One of the returning boxers is India’s most successful men’s national team member, Amit Panghal who advanced to the semi-finals of the flyweight in the Thailand Open.

Amit Panghal joined to the national team in the first months of 2017 and quickly claimed medals in the major championships. He earned gold at the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games and at the Bangkok 2019 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships which are his highlights in the continental events. Furthermore, he was silver medallist at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and at the Dubai 2021 ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships.

Amit Panghal was seeded No.1 at the flyweight in the Tokyo Olympic Games but he had seriously tough draw despite of his position in the ranking. He suffered a loss to Colombia’s Rio 2016 Olympics silver medallist Yuberjen Martinez in the last 16 and his early elimination was an upset for the Indian star.

Following eight months of break, he returned to the international stage at the Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament in Phuket following his active sessions in the training gym. He met in the quarter-finals with Thailand’s Thanakon Aonyaem who competed at the Fujairah 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships and will be turning to 19 later this year. The Thai teenager was competitive opponent for the Indian rival but the Amit Panghal decided their contest with his quick attacks. The Indian flyweight boxer enjoyed his first contest after the unsuccessful Tokyo Olympic Games and defeated a super talented Thai teenager in Phuket.

“It was my first contest since the Tokyo Olympics and this is not my best performance yet but I made one step forward in my objectives this year. I need still ring experiences before the main events but I am happy that I am here in this strong Thailand Open,” said India’s best male boxer, Amit Panghal who can continue his road in Phuket in the semi-finals which will take place on Friday.
