India’s Krisha Verma is the first Asian gold medallist in Pueblo

Ten finals were finished at the World Boxing’s U19 World Boxing Championships in Pueblo, United States on Day6 and among the Asian boxers, India’s Krisha Verma became the first historic gold medallist.

The total number of the boxers is 165 from 25 nations in the United States where 20 champions will be crowned after the finals. India, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand are the participating Asian countries in Pueblo.

Boxers who were born in 2006 and in 2007, are eligible to participate at the U19 World Boxing Championships in the United States.

India’s Krisha Verma had a very difficult semi-final against New Zealand’s Nika Perez in the women’s middleweight (75kg) but her routine helped her to survive this battle. The Indian was more focused in the day of the finals and she earned the title of the weight category with excellent performance. Her German opponent, Lerika Simon joined the youth national team only this year and Verma felt the distance well to take India’s first gold medal in Pueblo.

India’s Adriatic Pearl Youth Tournament winner Chanchal Chaudhary was the first Asian finalist in Pueblo but she could not manage the success against England’s Ruby White at the women’s 48kg weight class and she earned a silver medal.

India’s Anjali Kumari Singh (women’s 54kg), Vini (women’s 60kg), Akansha Phalaswal (women’s 70kg), and Rahul Kundu (men’s 75kg) all fought bravely in the finals but they suffered a loss to their English and US opponents.

Kazakhstan’s Daniyal Raimbekov also earned a silver medal in Pueblo where he lost to Wales’ Daniel Pitt at the men’s 85kg weight category. South Korea’s lone finalist, Lee Geon Hui did not have realistic chance to beat England’s Leo Atang at the men’s +90kg division and he bagged a silver medal.

The finals to be continued on November 2 in Pueblo and the bouts will start at 1pm according to the competition schedule.
