India’s famous coach Mr. Shiv Singh will support Nepal’s boxing in the upcoming months

Mr. Shiv Singh will lead the preparations of the Nepali boxers for the Asian Games and he will support them in the ringside during the competition as well. The 66-year-old coach has 43 years of experience in boxing training, management and event planning.
Nepal Boxing has the clear goal in the Asian Games, to achieve a medal, the first in boxing since 2010. Mr. Deepak Maharjan, a current coach in the national team was their last medallist, he earned a bronze at the light heavyweight in Guangzhou thirteen years ago. Nepal’s current national team has a huge potential especially in women’s boxing where the country reached historic results in 2021 and in 2023.
Nepal Boxing hired the experienced Indian coach until the end of the Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China between September 23 and October 8. Mr. Shiv Singh’s contract could be extended until the Paris 2024 Olympic Games if his team will earn at least one medal in the upcoming Asian Games.
The first competition day in the boxing event of the Asian Games is September 24 while the finals will be held in Hangzhou on October 4 and 5. The Asian Games will be the first qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games in the continent before the two World Olympic Qualifiers next year.
Mr. Shiv Singh was three-time medallists in the All India Inter University Boxing Championships as an active athlete. He received his boxing diploma in the NIS in Patiala in 1980 where the famous O.P. Bhardwaj led the sessions. He worked as coach in the Indian Army Boxing teams between 1980 and 1983 before working with Haryana Sports Department joining Sports Authority of India.
Mr. Shiv Singh attended in a coaching program in Germany in 1995 and he received the position of the head coach of the Indian sub-junior national team in 1996. He built up several talents such as Akhil Kumar, Mohammed Ali Qamar, Dinesh Kumar and India’s first Olympic medallist, Vijender Singh who all competed successfully in the international stage later as elite boxers.
The Dronacharya Award winner Indian coach worked with the Indian women’s national team in the previous years and supported their success in the Women’s World Boxing Championships, ASBC Asian Boxing Championships and other events. Following his career in India, Mr. Shiv Singh will support Nepal’s boxing team in the upcoming months.
