India won seven women medals including three titles in the Ahmet Cömert Tournament

The Ahmet Cömert Tournament is a prestigious competition in Turkey which was held in Istanbul in the recent days. Following the 12 Asian gold medals in the Silesian Open Women’s Boxing Tournament the Indian women squad claimed three gold medals, two silver and two bronze medals in Istanbul.
In spite of the fact the top Indian woman boxing team attended in the thirteenth edition of the Silesian Open Women’s Boxing Tournament where their five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion and five-time ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte won the light flyweight (48kg) their other squad achieved eight medals in the Ahmet Cömert Tournament in Istanbul.
The first Indian gold medal was achieved by Monika at the light flyweight (48kg) in the Ahmet Cömert Tournament which means both strong European events have been won by the Indians in the same weekend. The Indian talent defeated Turkey’s experienced Ayse Cagirir in the final of the competition winning the bout by unanimous decision.
The second Indian title was bagged by Simranjit Kaur who defeated also a strong Turkish boxer Sema Caliskan in the final of the light welterweight (64kg). Bhagyawati Kachari, who regained his place in the national squad after a few years, eliminated Turkey’s EUBC European Women’s Champion Elif Guneri in the semi-final and she was too strong for Selma Karakoyun in the title bout of the light heavyweight (81kg).
Commonwealth Games bronze medallist Pinky Jangra Rani eliminated Romania’s EUBC European Women’s Champion Steluta Duta and Australia’s Taylah Robertson during her road to the final of the flyweight (51kg) but she lost to Turkey’s Busenaz Cakiroglu and achieved silver medal in Istanbul. The second Indian silver medal was achieved by Meena Kumari Maisnam who had a close final against Romania’s Claudia Nechita.
India took also two bronze medals in the Ahmet Cömert Tournament following Sonia advanced to the last four in the featherweight (57kg) and former AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Kavita Chahal’s performance in the heavyweight (+81kg). Preeti Beniwal (60kg), Pooja (69kg) and Alari Boro (75kg) were also member of the team but they lost earlier as the medal contests.
The Indian women boxers have been preparing with full speed to the AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships which will be taking place in Delhi in mid November.
