Huang, Im, Manikon and Amit return to the Olympic Games after Tokyo

Huang Hsiao Wen, Im Ae Ji, Baison Manikon and Amit Panghal qualified for their second Olympic Games through the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok.

Chinese Taipei earned five Olympic quotas in boxing before the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event and their sixth was achieved by Huang Hsiao Wen at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) following her success over Montenegro’s Bojana Gojkovic. Mongolia’s Enkhjargal Munguntsetseg acquired the next Asian quota in this weight class, which was her nation’s second in overall.

South Korea earned its first quota for the Paris Olympics yesterday and their Im Ae Ji achieved their second at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) today after beating Azerbaijan’s Zeynab Rahimova. Im Ae Ji and Oh Yeon Ji could represent South Korea in the Tokyo Olympics and the two boxers will be able to compete in Paris as well.

Uzbekistan bagged ten Olympic quotas before Navbakhor Khamidova’s quota bout at the women’s welterweight (66kg). The Asian Champion Uzbek had a wonderful strategy against Serbia’s ex-Russian Kristina Kuluhova who is the defending European Champion. Khamidova was punctual, effective and she landed the better shots in their meeting to take Uzbekistan’s 11th spot for Paris in total.

Thailand’s Baison Manikon was only 18 when she qualified for the Tokyo Olympics and the local star acquired her next spot for Paris. The Thai middleweight (75kg) boxer used her distance effectively against Italy’s Melissa Gemini and she defeated her opponent making the crowd proud. Kazakhstan’s Valentina Khalzova was also dominant in her quota bout, she outpointed Colombia’s Shirleidis Orozco in this weight class.

Philippines’ Hergie Bacyadan was able to turn back her previous bout and she was also not enough shape in the first round against Venezuela’s Maryelis Yriza for the quota. The Filipina performed much better in the second round when the referee counted the South American after her heavy punch. Bacyadan, who switched from other martial arts to boxing in 2019, took her nation’s fifth Olympic boxing quota for Paris.

China’s Liu Chuang is a newcomer in the national team but he advanced to the quarter-finals at the men’s flyweight (51kg) in Bangkok. The Chinese boxer surprised India’s No.1, Amit Panghal in the first round with his speed but his opponent slowed him down in the second. The Asian Games winner Indian stepped into the gas in the beginning of the second round and he qualified for his second Olympics after Tokyo.
