Hakeem, Tan brothers dazzle in Singapore’s national competition

Southeast Asian Games veteran Muhammad Dinie Hakeem and Tan brothers Velvan and Velco came out victorious in their weight categories in the Singapore Boxing Federation (SBF) National Championships held last March at the Bedok Sports Hall.

Hakeem, a bronze medalist in the 2017 SEA Games, brought lessons from the 2022 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament and used them to rule the men’s super heavyweight (+92kg) by crushing Christian Bouverat, 3-0, in the title bout.

Velvan, a former Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC) Asian Youth Boxing Championships bet, earned the welterweight (67kg) belt after coming through with a lopsided 3-0 victory over Raihan Ibrahim in the final.

His older brother Velco battered Erik Danial Malik to pull off a referee stops contest (RSC) decision in the light middleweight (71kg) gold medal fight.

Eight other pugilists snared a gold mint in this tournament that hosted many boxers across four weight classes in the women’s division, two in men’s youth and five in men’s elite.

The National Championships were part of the Singaporean boxing team’s preparations for the upcoming SEA Games in Hanoi, Vietnam next month as well as the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September.
