Future Filipino stars as Criz Russu Laurente and Jean Minguillan shined in the Batang Pinoy Junior & School National Championships

Philippines’ last national event in the year of 2016 was held in the city of Tagum in Davao del Norte in the recent days. Their new edition of the Batang Pinoy National Boxing Championships was held for the junior, schoolboys and schoolgirls age groups for both genders in Tagum, Davao del Norte.
Philippines’ best junior boxer Criztian Pitt Laurente, who was successful member of the national team in 2015 and won the gold medal in the Children of Asia Games a few months ago, had to miss the Batang Pinoy National Boxing Championships but the local crowd could see several new hopes and future stars in Tagum.
Cagayan de Oro’s Marty Ann Lauglaug is only 13 and likes the dogs so much but in the ring she is a real amazon which she proved in the first final of the whole Batang Pinoy National Championships. The mosquito weight (38kg) boxer controlled the whole final against Faith Collin Llamas in Tagum and celebrated her first national title.
Cagayan de Oro’s next gold medal was achieved by in the second schoolgirl final Jolibeth Maglasang who was too smart for Polomonok’s Pearl Kimberly Corminal at the light paperweight (40kg). The further gold medals among the schoolgirls were delivered by Jilyn De La Cruz and Roselyn De La Cruz.
Davao del Sur’s Jean Minguillan was the biggest name of the women’s junior part of the Batang Pinoy National Championships who delivered the expected gold medal at the pinweight (46kg) in Tagum. Following her gold medal in the Philippine National Games she was able to beat Cagayan de Oro’s Elaide Pamisa in the final of the Batang Pinoy National Championships.
Cagayan de Oro’s Gina Casin lost to Jean Minguillan in the quarter-final of the Philippine National Games in March but this time she was able to win her light flyweight (48kg) in Tagum. She defeated Davao del Sur’s Renlie Borang in her final bout and proved her talent in the national event. Leyte Sports Academy’s Judy Ann Orbeta also delivered top performance in the competition where she won the junior light bantamweight (52kg).
General Santos’ Angela Bianca Laurente was also amazing in the national event in Tagum where she won against South Cotabato’s Realyn Lanila in the final of the bantamweight (54kg). General Santos’ next top female talent Roxan Kapawan was silver medallist at the junior bantamweight (54kg) in the Philippine National Games this year but since then she moved up to the featherweight (57kg). The 16-year-old young lady won the title after beating Baguio City’s Arla Chalis in the sixth women’s junior final.
The first gold medal in the schoolboys age group was achieved by Bago City’s Rodel Gamo who was too strong for General Santos’ Lester John Yanis in the final of the light mosquito weight (36kg). Polomonok’s lone gold medal in the Batang Pinoy National Championships was taken by Mark John Onal who defeated Cagayan De Oro’s Jericho Acaylar in the final of the mosquito weight (38kg).
Carl John Austria shined in the Philippine National Games Mindanao Leg Qualifiers in Koronadal City one year ago as a kid boxer and since then he moved up to the schoolboys. The 13-year-old talent did not give any chance to Sipalay City’s Charlie Calago in the final of the light paperweight (40kg) and secured his next title.
Cagayan de Oro’s John Vincent Pangga was also gold medallist among the kids in the Philippine National Games Mindanao Leg Qualifiers in Koronadal City in 2015 and repeated the same performance as Carl John Austria in the Batang Pinoy National Championships which was his second big national title during his career.
General Santos’ Criz Russu Napoles Laurente was born in 2001, he is spending his first year in the junior age group, but dominated all of his contests in the pinweight (46kg) during the Batang Pinoy National Championships. The 15-year-old talent, who came from a boxing family, subdued Agusan del Sur Province’s Mindanao Qualifiers winner Dexter Louie Racoma in the first final of the junior age group.
One of the main surprise of the whole Batang Pinoy National Championships was delivered by Cagayan de Oro’s Marco John Rementizo who not only advanced to the final of the junior light flyweight (48kg) but he was able to beat Sarangani Province’s Philippine Junior National Games winner top favourite Dave Mark Apolinario for the title.
General Santos’ R.V. Denega won the gold medal in the Philippine Junior National Games this March and controlled all of his contests in the Batang Pinoy National Championships as well. The light bantamweight (52kg) boxer defeated Joshua Pagdual in the final of the event and delivered his next strong performance.
Davao del Sur’s Richard Bulacan was bronze medallist in the Philippine Junior National Games and since that podium place he moved up two weight classes. The 16-year-old talent proved he is better than Tagbilaran City’s Danrick Sumabong in the final of the bantamweight (54kg) which was his first title during his career.
Panabo City’s Jet Bruce Fornes joined to the junior age group this year and following his triumphs in Mindanao he was able to win a national title in Tagum. Fornes was too strong for Davao del Sur’s Jestine Tesoro in the final of the featherweight (57kg). Davao del Sur’s Reymark Alicaba and Davao City’s Junmilardo Ogayre won the further gold medals in the junior age group.
