Four Asians capture titles in Women’s World Championships
Two Indian and two Chinese standouts grabbed gold medals in the first part of the IBA Women’s World Boxing Championships 2023 on Saturday in New Delhi, India.
India’s young star Nitu Ghanghas, a former two-time youth world champion and Commonwealth Games 2022 winner, capped off her golden campaign with a 5-0 domination over Mongolia’s first-ever finalist Lutsaikhan Altantsetseg in the minimumweight (48kg) division.
Reigning ASBC Asian elite titlist Saweety Boora delivered the host nation’s second gold after posting a split decision upset against China’s former world champ Wang Lina in the light heavyweight (81kg) class.
China’s Wu Yu got her breakthrough on the international stage after crushing Italy’s European U22 gold medalist Sirine Charaabi in flyweight (52kg). Wu used her quick attacks as the best weapon in this final bout and the Chinese boxer earned the second Asian title of the championships in New Delhi.
Her teammate, Cologne World Cup 2019 winner Yang Chengyu hacked out a 4-1 victory over Russia’s Natalia Sychugova to reign supreme in light welterweight (63kg). Yang had very strict defence in the final and her infighting style was uncomfortable for the younger Sychugova.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s defending Asian Champion Karina Ibragimova settled for silver in featherweight (57kg) following a tough 1-4 defeat to Italy’s two-time European Champion and Olympic Games bronze medallist Irma Testa.
Russia’s 19-year-old Anastasia Demurchian decimated Australia’s Kaye Frances Scott, 5-0, to emerge on top of light middleweight (70kg).
The remaining gold medal matches are scheduled on Sunday, March 26.
