Five Kazakh gold medals at the 68th Bocskai Memorial Tournament

The 68th edition of the Bocskai Memorial Tournament delivered strong successes for the Kazakhs, their Askhat Zhussupov, Assylzhan Serikbay, Biybars Zheksen, Yertugan Zeinullinov and Yerassyl Zhakpekov all claimed gold medals in Hungary.

The Kazakhs and the Mongolians sent strong squads to the Bocskai Memorial Tournament which is one of the oldest competitions in Europe. The 68th Bocskai Memorial was held in the city of Debrecen as all of the previous editions since the 1950s.

Askhat Zhussupov not only advanced to the final of the men’s minimumweight (48kg) in Debrecen but he controlled the title bout against Ukraine’s World Championships competitor Andriy Tyshkovets. The Kazakh boxer earned several medals in the international stage but finally he claimed a gold in a very strong preparation tournament.

Assylzhan Serikbay claimed a bronze medal at the recent Kazakhstan Elite National Championships and the 22-year-old featherweight (57kg) boxer proved his strong progress in Debrecen. Serikbay was not the favourite against Hungary’s European Championships bronze medallist Roland Veres but he had a great finish to beat his local rival with aggressive style of boxing.

Kazakhstan’s Asian Youth Champion and Asian Junior Champion Biybars Zheksen was one of the top stars at the Bocskai Memorial Tournament in Hungary who dominated his final at the lightweight (60kg). The 22-year-old boxer won all of the three rounds against a Hungarian teenager, Kruzito Kovacs in the final with confident boxing.

Yertugan Zeinullinov received the right to represent Kazakhstan at the Asian Games in Hangzhou but he was not able to get an Olympic spot for Paris yet. The 26-year-old Kazakh impressed in the final of the light welterweight (63.5kg) against Hungary’s Paris Olympian and European Games bronze medallist Richard Kovacs and he caused the next sensation in the day of the finals.

Daniyal Sabit had a very tight contest against Hungary’s former European Youth Champion Attila Bernath but finally he claimed a silver medal. Another young, 20-year-old Kazakh, Kenzhe Muratuly lost to Hungary’s Gabor Virban in the final of the bantamweight (54kg) and he also earned a silver in Debrecen.

Sabyrzhan Akkalykov, the 2021 Youth World Champion, was very near to beat Ukraine’s World Champion Yuriy Zakharieiev in the final at the men’s light middleweight (71kg). The two-time Asian Youth Champion Temirlan Mukatayev also claimed a silver medal in Debrecen following his tight loss to Ukraine’s Danylo Zhasan.
