Farouq Al-Junaidi defended his throne at the Syrian Youth National Championships in Latakia

The Syrian Youth National Championships was the country’s first competition in 2021 and a big comeback to the competitions. Following the National Sparring Events, their Youth National Championships was the next activity in Syria. The country’s best future hope Farouq Al-Junaidi dominated all of his contests at the heavyweight (91kg) and defended his throne.

The event was held in Latakia in the same venue as in the 2020 edition of the Syrian Youth National Championships. The boxers who were born in 2003 and in 2004, were eligible to attend in the Syrian Youth National Championships. Altogether 70 boxers attended from all regions of the country in 10 weight classes which meant 60 contests were in the official program of the Syrian Youth National Championships.

The Army Boxing Club topped the team standings ahead of Latakia, Aleppo, Hama, Damascus and Tartous. Teams from Quentra, Homs, Daraa, Damascus Super and Soeda also sent boxers to Latakia. The Army Boxing Club had four titles while host Latakia earned three in the new edition of the Syrian Youth National Championships.

The event was preparation and selection before the main international goals of the year including the upcoming AIBA Youth World Boxing Championships which is scheduled to be held in Kielce, Poland on April 10-24. The Syrian boxers will be attending in training camps in Iran to prepare well to the next actions.

Hama’s lone gold medal was achieved by Ali Daiboul at the light flyweight (49kg) who has done a great job against Mohammad Abed Alrahim in the final. Aleppo’s Hamed Obeid claimed bronze medal at the 2020 Syrian Youth National Championships but since then he moved up to the flyweight (52kg). The 18-year-old talent reached great results also in the Syrian Test Sparring Events and controlled all of his fights among the youth boxers.

Mohamed Sayed Shoueb won the flyweight (52kg) in the 2020 Syrian Youth National Championships and following his success over Amjad Al-Hamwe, he earned his next gold medal but this time at the bantamweight (56kg). Latakia’s first title was taken by Zein Al Abdeen Aboud who defeated the defending champion, Mohamed Zouheir Al-Sakran of Aleppo in the final of the lightweight (60kg).

Latakia’s Hamza Haydar was bronze medallist at the light welterweight (64kg) in the 2020 Syrian Youth National Championships which he changed into gold in 2021 after beating Hamza Al-Baroudi. Army Boxing Club’s Ghiedaq Hamdan was too strong for Abdelqader Katakhda in the final of the welterweight (69kg).

Army Club’s Basam Al-Alawi had experiences from the previous junior and youth events therefore his success over Latakia’s Bashar Shourike was not a surprise at the middleweight (75kg). Army’s third-in-a-row national title was delivered by 2020 gold medallist Haidara Abdulrahman Saqar who has done enough to beat Hama’s Ibrahim Qourmah at the light heavyweight (81kg).

Army’s Farouq Al-Junaidi won several titles in the recent years including the 2020 edition of the Syrian Youth National Championships and the first session of the Sparring Test Event last July. He will be turning to 18 later this year but he is Syria’s best hope for the future which he proved in Latakia against Hama’s Mohamed Goukhieli in the final of the event and defended his throne.

The super heavyweight (+91kg) was a strong category for Syria in the recent two decades therefore the traditions needs to be continued in the future. Latakia’s last year’s bronze medallist Soheib Abo Deist was too experienced for all of his opponents including Mohamed Zeinab of Tartous in the final.
