Exciting finals and ten winners at the Philippines’ Palarong Pambansa


Philippines’ first national competition in 2023 was the Palarong Pambansa in Marikina City where their schoolboys, junior and youth talents competed for the medals. The Department of Education of the Philippines hosted the annual multisport competition where such strong future talents as Leo Mhar Lobrido, Clark Vicera, Tyron Jay Quillosa and Daryl De La Cruz won their weight classes.
The Palarong Pambansa contains 34 various sports on its agenda and more than 9,000 athletes competed in Marikina City, representing 17 regional associations. Philippine President Mr. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. opened the Palarong Pambansa, while it was closed by the Philippine Vice-President Mrs. Sara Duterte.
The boxing event saw altogether 150 bouts and 10 champions have been crowned in the new edition of the Palarong Pambansa. The competition venue was the Plaza De Los Alcades in Marikina City Hall Grounds and three age groups could join the event.
A Refresher Course was held for the referees, judges and technical officials prior to the start of the Palarong Pambansa updated on the new IBA Technical and Competition Rules. Newly passed Technical Official, the Tournament Director Mr. Jonathan Oscar G. Jimenez, assisted by two IBA 3-star Referee & Judge, Mrs. Ludy Therese Ceriales and Mr. Maximo Abalos, facilitated the Course.
Mrs. Maria Karina Picson served as Technical Delegate of the Palarong Pambansa, Mrs. Ludy Therese Ceriales and Mr. Maximo Abalos worked as Deputy Technical Delegates, Mr. Jonathan Oscar G. Jimenez and Mr. Rolando Jose as R&J Evaluators.
Two schoolboys won the Palarong Pambansa, firstly Leo Mhar Lobrido of Western Visayas defeated Andrei JC Alexi Alava at the 46kg weight class, secondly Miguelito Bantilan of Davao City triumphed over John Michael Estorba at the 48kg.
Five junior boxers earned their gold medals in the national event, Francis Jarencio was the first who succeeded, he defeated John Reeve Vinoya at the pinweight (46kg). Clark Vicera, a former Batang Pinoy Champion, dominated the flyweight (50kg), he was too strong for Jerome Lopez in the final. Tyron Jay Quillosa from Zamboanga City also impressed in the finals, he triumphed over Reinjel Vinas at the junior bantamweight (54kg).
Zyvyr John Medecilo won the busy youth minimumweight (48kg), he controlled all of the three rounds against Brian Amparo. Ian Carl Muyso also won all rounds in each scorecard against Allan Jay Marcial and won the tough flyweight (51kg). The 18-year-old Daryl De La Cruz, who trains at the El Tigre Boxing Gym in Mandaluyong City, won the third youth weight class in Marikina City.
