Durens headlines Philippines in Asian U22 Championships
Rising star Mark Lester Durens leads the eight-strong Philippine national team for the ASBC Asian U22 Championships 2023 on January 16-27 in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 22-year-old Durens, who snagged a bronze medal in the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships Dubai 2021, is projected as one of the favorites to win in the men’s minimumweight (48kg) class.
Asian Elite Championships 2022 campaigner Althea Shine Pores is set to return to the international stage when she competes in the women’s minimumweight (48kg) division. Pores is a small girl in this weight class but she has a very aggressive and attacking style of boxing.
Another notable bet in Jericho Acaylar, who saw action in the Asian Junior Championships Fujairah 2019, will slug it out in men’s featherweight (57kg).
Aaron Jude Bado (men’s fly-51kg), Flint Jara (bantam-54kg), Mervin Lucky Alcober (light-60kg), Mark Ashley Fajardo (light welter-63.5kg) and Mariel Silva Talandrata (women’s light fly-50kg) complete the national squad.
Philippines sent their best boxers to the ASBC Asian Youth & Junior Boxing Championships, Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament, Southeast Asian Games, Women’s World Boxing Championships, USA International Invitational Tournament, Youth World Boxing Championships and the ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in 2022.
The young Filipino boxers will shoot for a historic first gold medal in the Asian U22 tilt after missing out on the inaugural edition last year in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
