Boltayev, Zoidov score big wins for Tajikistan on World Championships Day 8
Tajikistan’s ASBC Asian U22 champion Davlat Boltayev and rising standout Meroj Zoidov overcame their significant contests on the eighth competition day of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
Boltayev sustained his momentum in the heavyweight (92kg) class, landing lethal shots against Mexico’s Carlos Rodriguez that forced the ringside doctor to confirm his RSC-I victory in the third round.
Zoidov, for his part, continued to exceed expectations as the 19-year-old stunned multiple European junior-youth and Strandja Memorial winner Yasen Radev of Bulgaria via a slim decision after a review of their bantamweight (54kg) bout.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s 2021 silver medalist and top seed Makhmud Sabyrkhan opened his bantamweight campaign with a 5-0 romp over Hungary’s Bocskai Memorial Tournament winner Istvan Szaka.
Also barging into the last 16 of the same weight division were India’s Sachin, Kyrgyzstan’s third seed Sanzhai Seidakmatov, Japan’s Shogo Tanaka and Uzbekistan’s Oybek Jurayev.
Uzbekistan’s reigning ASBC Asian champion Lazizbek Mullojonov unloaded sharp counter attacks to manhandled Georgia’s European U22 Championships silver medalist Giorgi Tchigladze, 5-0, in heavyweight.
Kazakhstan’s Asian title-holder Sanzhar Tashkenbay beat Uzbekistan’s Shodiyorjon Melikuziev in their rematch while Thailand’s 2021 world silver finisher Wuttichai Yurachai nipped Azerbaijan’s Tural Sariyev, 4-1, to enter the minimumweight quarterfinals.
Jordan’s defending Asian lightweight (60kg) champ Mohammad Adnan Abu Jajeh posted an lopsided 5-0 triumph against Fiji’s Jone Davule even as Uzbekistan’s Strandja winner Mujibullo Tursunov thrashed Morocco’s Mohamed Hamout, 5-0, as both secured their quarterfinal berths.
Uzbekistan’s Asian U22 titlist Shokhjakhon Abdullayev pulled off a huge 5-0 upset over Kazakhstan’s three-time Asian winner Sagyndyk Togambay in cruiserweight (86kg).
