Billy Vong notes top-notch competition in Asian U22 Championships
Macau’s renowned boxing official Mr. Billy Vong expressed his elation over the level of competition in ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships recently held in Bangkok, Thailand.
Vong, who is regarded as the engine behind the local boxing scene in Macau, served as the Deputy Technical Delegate in the second edition of the Asian U22 tilt.
“The ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships showed a top level competition. Many countries sent their best teams including several previous champions. The event was a great preparation for the upcoming Asian Games and other international tournaments,” said Vong.
He thanked the Asian Boxing Confederation and Thailand Boxing Association, both led by President Pichai Chunhavajira, for giving him the chance to work in the event.
“I felt very happy and excited to return to an international boxing event after Macau lifted the Covid-19 travel restrictions. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the ASBC for allowing me to participate in such a great event and I am looking forward to working in the next events soon.”
“I’m very glad to work with the experienced Technical Delegate, Mrs. Karina Picson, all of my ITO colleagues and LOC. They were kind and smart so I learned a lot from them and I increased my experience and knowledge.”
The ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships was an amazing competition and this young age group showed its power in Bangkok. The U22 boxers are our Asian boxing future and I believe that our boxers will achieve further strong results in the international events and at the Olympic Games in 2024.
Vong also emphasized that they are now ready to return to international competitions, citing their plans to join training camps, attend international tournaments and develop their youth boxers.
“The most important event for us is the Asian Games in 2023. We would like to send the best boxers for international training camps in order to prepare well for that,” he said.
In my opinion, it would be good to organize more training camps and tournaments in different Asian zones for our boxers, especially assist the smaller federations to join events due their boxing resources is limited. We would be able to improve our skills of our Asian referees and judges in the same time during our new tournaments.
“We will try our best to participate in the IBA and ASBC tournaments in the forthcoming two years while planning to organize the Macau Open Boxing Championships and invite nearby countries.”
“We would put emphasis on youth training, cooperate with universities and high schools to organize more boxing events and summer training camps. Moreover, we will also try to develop VR boxing for children under 12 years old to engage them.”
