Bhutan boxers to train in Thailand

ASBC and Thailand Boxing Association President Pichai Chunhavajira and Bhutan National Olympic Committee President HRH Prince Jigyel Ugyen Wangchuk have agreed to have 2 boxers of Bhutan train in Thailand to upgrade the skill levels of the amateur boxers from the Southern Asian country.

Thailand is acknowledged as one of the powerhouse boxing teams in Asia, having won several Olympic medals in the sport.

“We are honored to have come to an agreement with His Royal Highness and we are very happy to assist our Asian neighbors in whatever way we can to improve the abilities of their boxers”, said Pichai, who also espoused cooperation among countries in the region as one of his programs when he ran for ASBC president earlier this year.

Initially, boxers Tashi Wangdi and Tenzin Drugyel will be the beneficiaries of the program which was made possible with the cooperation between the Thailand Boxing Association and the Bhutan National Olympic Committee, with funding to be provided through Olympic Solidarity.

Pichai said “this is only the start of more regional partnerships that we envision will happen in Asia. We aim to give our boxers better opportunities not only in the Olympics but in many other international competitions as well”.
