Bahrain national boxing team head coach and technical development manager Tony Davis revealed that they are sending their top pugilists to a training camp with the British Army in the United Kingdom to prepare them for the important tournaments this year.
Following the training camp, the Bahraini boxers will compete in the fifth edition of the Eindhoven Cup, the largest Olympic boxing event of the Netherlands, scheduled on June 3 to 6.
“Plans are underway for a training camp with the British Army in the UK before heading to the Eindhoven Box Cup to develop some of our Bahraini talents. Obviously this is a step up in class, but a necessity for gaining more international experience,” said Davis, a former coach of the Great Britain (GB) boxing squad.
Davis said national team captain Ali Mohammed Saeed, ASBC Asian Youth Boxing Championships bronze medalist Sayed Fadhel Abdulla, Yousif Albalooshi and Prakash Lim Izam will join the Eindhoven Cup.
The veteran tactician explained that they are giving the national boxers a much-needed international exposure as they aim to bring the Bahraini flag to the boxing competition of the Asian Games for the first time in history when the quadrennial continental meet takes place in China in November.
“The aspiration is for Bahrain to make its debut in the Asian Games, but that will depend on the amount of preparation and experience we can ascertain prior,” said the ex-British soldier, who was considered a hero for attempting to save the life of the police officer fatally stabbed in a terrorist attack in Westminster back in 2017.
Bahrain will also host its National Championships in October in preparation for the ASBC Asian Elite Championships and the 2024 Paris Olympics qualifiers next year.
