Asian stars dominate light welterweight on World Championships Day 2
Ruslan Abdullayev, Baatarsukh Chinzorig, Bakhodur Usmonov, Obada Al-Kasbeh and Sanatali Toltayev ignited Asian dominance in the light welterweight (63.5kg) division preliminaries of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan on Tuesday.
Uzbekistan’s defending ASBC Asian Champion Abdullayev put up a strong performance in front of the home fans at Humo Arena, hacking out a 5-0 rout against Puerto Rico’s Manuel Febus.
Former Asian Champion Chinzorig of Mongolia and Usmonov of Tajikistan also came through with lopsided 5-0 victories over Australia’s Maximilian McChlery and Tanzania’s Alex Michael Isendi, respectively.
Jordan’s two-time Asian silver finisher Al-Kasbeh smashed Antigua & Barbuda’s best boxer Alston Ryan, 5-0, while Kazakhstan’s ex-Asian youth champ Toltayev eked out a slim win over Israel’s Ahmad Shtiwi after a bout review.
Also contributing to Asia’s win streak in the light welterweight class evening session were Kyrgyzstan’s youth world bronze medalist Zhantoro Tashiyev, China’s Wang Xiangyang, Thailand’s Khunatip Pidnuch and Turkmenistan’s Hursand Imankuliyev.
Tashiyev eliminated Eswatini’s Thabiso Selby Dlamini, 5-0, even as Wang did the same against Pakistan’s Mohib Ullah. Pidnuch pipped Austria’s Arsen Chabyan, 4-1, while Imankuliyev sneaked past Belarus’ Dzmitry Dziashkevich via split decision.
Meanwhile, Central Asian boxers shone in cruiserweight (86kg) on Day 2, with Uzbekistan’s Asian U22 Champion Shokhjakhon Abdullayev leading the charge after crushing Kyrgyz star Erkin Adylbek Uulu for a unanimous result.
Kazakhstan’s promising pug Sagyndyk Togambay stopped DR Congo’s Nathan Nlandu Mbeli while Tajikistan’s Parviz Karimov trounced Iran’s Amin Majnouni, 5-0.
Jordan’s Tokyo Olympian Odai Riyad Al-Hindawi also triumphed in cruiserweight with a 5-0 romp over Montenegro’s youth world silver winner Petar Lijesevic.
In the light heavyweight (80kg) division, India’s Ashish Kumar beat Iran’s Meysam Gheslaghi, 4-1, even as China’s Tokyo Olympian Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan subdued Armenia’s Hambardzum Hakobyan, 5-0.
