Asian heavyweights take spotlight on Day 5

Lazizbek Mullujonov, Davlat Boltayev and Alaaeldin Ghossoun spearheaded the charge of Asian boxers in the heavyweight (92kg) class of the IBA Men’s World Boxing Championships 2023 on the fifth day of competition in Tashkent, Uzbekistan.

The reigning ASBC Asian elite champion and World Military Boxing Championships winner Mullujonov made the home crowd proud as he crushed Colombia’s Marlon Hurtado, 5-0, for an opening triumph.

Tajikistan’s Asian U22 Champion Boltayev used his fleet footwork to eliminate Serbian veteran Sadam Magomedov with a slim decision after bout review.

Syria’s Asian elite bronze medalist Ghossoun utilized his experience to stop Romania’s Emanuel Constantin Mican in the third round.

China’s Han Xuezhen, India’s Naveen Kumar and Iran’s Pouria Amiri also barged into the Round of 16 in heavyweight following their convincing results versus separate foes.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s reigning Asian champ and world silver winner Abdumalik Khalokov clobbered Guyana’s top pug Keevin Allicock, 5-0, for a furious start in the featherweight (57kg) division.

Kazakhstan’s world and Asian silver finisher Serik Termizhanov also got off to a strong opening in featherweight, trouncing Mali’s Abdoul Karim Bathily, 5-0.

Also emerging victorious in featherweight were India’s Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Mohammed Hussamuddin, Jordan’s Yousef Iashash, and Kyrgyzstan’s veteran Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu.

Kazakhstan’s former youth world champion and Asian bronze finisher Nurbek Oralbay made up for the surprising loss of his twin brother Aibek as he mauled Azerbaijan’s Murad Allahverdiyev, 5-0, in light heavyweight (80kg).

Jordan’s two-time Olympian Hussein Iashaish was the first to boot out a local star in the tournament, pulling off a split decision upset against Uzbekistan’s two-time Asian U22 winner Jasurbek Yuldashev.

China’s current No.1, Tokyo Olympian Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan and Kyrgyzstan’s Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu won as well in light heavyweight (80kg). Both boxers had tough rivals in the fifth day of boxing but managed to win their contests by large margin of differences.
