ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam won her semi-final by RSC in the Vietnam Elite National Championships

Altogether 21 contests were held in the fifth competition day at the Vietnam Boxing Federation’s Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The women boxers were in action in the day of boxing and among them ASBC Asian Champion Nguyen Thi Tam stopped her opponent while Nguyen Thi Kim Sang, Dao Thi Hue and Vuong Thi Vy became also finalist.

Vietnam Boxing Federation hosted their National Cup for the elite boxers earlier and the country continues its activities for them. Women or men boxers who were born between 1980 and 2001 are eligible to attend in the National Championships. The President of the Vietnam Boxing Federation Mr. Tran Minh Tien opened the Elite National Boxing Championships where all of the provinces can attend throughout the country.

The competition is also a selection for the elite boxers before the World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which will be held on June 2021. Vietnam achieved its first male quota place in the Asian & Oceanian Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where Nguyen Van Duong achieved bronze medal and qualified for the Tokyo Olympics. Vietnam’s best boxer ASBC Asian Women’s Champion Nguyen Thi Tam did not qualify for the Games yet.

Altogether 62 female and 88 male boxers are attending for the medals in the Vietnam Elite National Championships in Bac Ninh province. The most popular category among the girls is the lightweight (60kg) with the participation of 10 boxers. Among the men boxers surprisingly the super heavyweight (+91kg) is the most crowded with 12 entries after the general weigh-in.

Nguyen Thi Kim Sang caused one of the main sensations of the fifth competition day when she met in the semi-finals of the women’s light flyweight (48kg) with experienced Trinh Thi Diem Kieu. Nguyen Thi Kim Sang has got also six years of experienced in the national events but her success over the defending champion and national team member Trinh, was a surprise in Bac Ninh province. Nguyen will be meeting for the title with Hanoi’s Nguyen Thi Huong Giang who defeated Nguyen Thi Huyen in the second semi-finals of the weight category.

Nguyen Thi Tam won the title at the 2017 ASBC Asian Women’s Boxing Championships and she claimed silver also in the last 2019 Bangkok edition. Vietnam’s best female boxer dominated her semi-final against Nguyen Phan Ngoc Nhi and the referee stopped their contest quickly still in the first round. Nguyen Thi Tam will have a strong rival in the final of the women’s flyweight (51kg), Vu Thi Huong who succeeded over Nguyen Thi Ngoc Giau.

Vuong Thi Vy was AIBA Women’s Junior World Champion in 2011 and moved ahead step by step in the international rankings. The 25-year-old featherweight (57kg) boxer decided to return after a short break and walked over to the final of the category following her opponent, Huynh Thi Nhu Y was unable to box against her. Vuong will be boxing for the title of the National Championships with Hanoi’s Le Thi Oanh. Hanoi’s Do Thi Thuy had a tough semi-final against an international level boxer, Nguyen Thi Huong but she was able to manage that tactical contest winning it by split decision due to her great stamina in the final round. In the second excited semi-final at the women’s lightweight (60kg), Dao Thi Hue bowed out Ha Thu Hong in the national event. Haiphong’s AIBA Women’s Youth World Boxing Championships competitor, Do Thi Mai had also a tough semi-final on Day5 but she eliminated Vu Thi Ngoc Duyen in the welterweight (69kg).
