ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships – Best U22 Male Boxer – Jakhongir Zokirov

Uzbekistan’s Jakhongir Zokirov not only won the super heavyweight (+92kg) and his fifth Asian title in Astana but he was named as the Best U22 Male Boxer in the ASBC Asian U22 & Youth Boxing Championships in Astana.

The strong Uzbek super heavyweight (+92kg) boxer is the son of Lazizbek Zokirov who competed in the Budapest 1997 AIBA World Boxing Championships and he claimed a silver medal at the 1995 Asian Boxing Championships. The Elite National Champion Jakhongir’s younger sister is Aziza Zokirova, who is member of the Uzbek national team as well.

Jakhongir Zokirov arrived to the 2019 ASBC Asian Junior Boxing Championships with perfect record and gold medals from international junior tournaments as the Heydar Aliyev and the Botvinnik Memorial. Zokirov defeated his top rivals such as India’s Vishal Gupta, Kazakhstan’s Roman Diar and Kyrgyzstan’s Argen Baktybekov during his road to the title.

Following his Youth world title in April 2021, Jakhongir Zokirov was the main favourite at the 2021 Asian Youth Boxing Championships in Dubai. Following his easy semi-final success, he met with Kazakhstan’s Youth National Champion Daniyal Saparbay for the title of the super heavyweight (+92kg). The taller Zokirov earned the title in Dubai and it was his third big achievement within two years.

His won his first ASBC Asian U22 title in Tashkent on January 2022 during the Covid-19 period. He faced for the title Tajikistan’s Mukhammad Abroridinov who is three-years older than him and his opponent had the physical conditions to keep the rhythm in the first round. The 18-year-old Uzbek performed better in the second and third rounds to win the 85th bout of the championships by unanimous decision.

Jakhongir Zokirov won the last title of the next championships after beating China’s Tuohongdaji Aizihaier at the super heavyweight (+92kg) in Bangkok on January 2023 during the 2nd edition of the ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships.

He was the top favourite against Kazakhstan’s Amanat Sabyrgali at the men’s U22 super heavyweight (+92kg) final in Astana a few days ago. The 20-year-old Uzbek star had powerful shots in the first round and he caught the brave Sabyrgali with several times. The Kazakh coaches abandoned this final bout after three minutes and the referee confirmed Zokirov’s success which was his fifth Asian title and the third among the U22 boxers.
