Hometown stars Erkin Adylbek Uulu and Sanzhai Seidakmatov ruled their respective weight classes to put the spotlight on host Kyrgyzstan in the Duisenkul Shopokov Memorial International Tournament 2023 on Saturday in Bishkek.

Rio Olympics flag bearer and three-time ASBC Asian elite bronze medallist Erkin Adylbek Uulu sustained his momentum from the Bocskai Tournament, coming up with a 5-0 rout of Uzbekistan’s Samandar Jalolov in the cruiserweight (86kg) division.

World Boxing Championships quarterfinalist Sanzhai Seidakmatov won despite moving down to bantamweight (54kg) as he clobbered Uzbekistan’s Asian Youth Champion, the 18-year-old Khujanazar Nortojiyev, 5-0.

Islam Torobayev (feather-57kg), Zhantoro Tashiyev (light welter-63.5kg), Eldar Turdubayev (light middle-71kg) and Daniyar Damirdin Uulu (75kg) also delivered golds for Kyrgyzstan. Kyrgyzstan’s ASBC bronze medallist from Amman, Nuradin Rustambek Uulu (71kg) could not fight in the last day of boxing and earned a silver medal in Bishkek.

Meanwhile, Uzbekistan’s Asian U22 champ Javlonbek Yuldashev walloped Kyrgyzstan’s Zhaksylyk Talaybekov, 5-0, in welterweight (67kg) while teammate Mirkomil Saytokhunov enjoyed a walkover win against Mongolia’s ex-Asian Champion Enkh-Amar Kharkhuu in lightweight (60kg).

The Belarusians earned three gold medals in the Duisenkul Shopokov Memorial Tournament, all of their top boxers as Yauheni Karmilchyk (48kg), the silver medallist from Belgrade, Aliaksei Alfiorau (80kg) and Uladzislau Smiahlikau (92kg) won the titles in Bishkek.

Kazakhstan’s Kenzhe Muratuly will be turning only to 20 this year but he had the skills to beat Uzbekistan’s Abdumajid Mannopov in the final of the flyweight (51kg). Belarus’ Dzianis Salotskikh and Kyrgyzstan’s ASBC Asian Boxing Championships bronze medallist Mirlan Turkbay Uulu earned only bronze medals in this weight class.

The event was named after Mr. Duisenkul Shopokov, the hero of the Soviet Union who died during the Great Patriotic War in the Battle of Moscow in December 1941.
