Abdulla Rajapov fulfilled the Cambodian dreams and Thailand won the medal standings at the 32nd SEA Games

The second part of the finals with the last eight title contests featured in the eighth competition day at the boxing tournament of the Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia today. Abdulla Rajapov earned a historic title for the host country but Thailand and Philippines remained on the top of the medal table.
Altogether 24 female and 71 male boxers competed for the 16 available titles in Phnom Penh. Host Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor Leste and Vietnam are the participating countries in the boxing event of the Southeast Asian Games. Thailand, Philippines, Vietnam and Cambodia shared the titles of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
The runner-up of the Tokyo Olympics, Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio earned only a bronze medal in the last SEA Games in Vietnam but she returned to her original featherweight (57kg). The 31-year-old boxer controlled all of the three rounds against Indonesia’s Ratna Sari Devi and she bagged a gold medal in Phnom Penh.
Thailand’s Janjaem Suwannapheng is one of their new sensations of their national team who earned medals in the 2022 and 2023 Women’s World Boxing Championships as well. The 22-year-old Thai had the advantage in punching power and speed against Cambodia’s Vy Srey Khouch and she decided the final very quickly still in the first round.
Thailand’s Natthapong Thuamcharoen had a close minimumweight (48kg) final contest against Indonesia’s Dio Koebanu in the battle of the U22 boxers. The reigning ASBC Asian Champion of the welterweight (67kg) Bunjong Sinsiri triumphed over Philippines’ Norlan Petecio in his final bout today. Weerapon Jongjoho delivered the third Thai male gold medal on Day8 after beating a former SEA Games winner, Philippines’ returning veteran, John Nobel Marvin.
Philippines had one male success in the first part of the finals yesterday but two of their boxers continued the country’s superb performance in Phnom Penh. The Olympics silver medallist Carlo Paalam defeated Indonesia’s Aldoms Suguro at the bantamweight (54kg) which was followed by his newcomer teammate, Paul Julyfer Bascon who had a surprise success against Thailand’s Rujakran Juntrong.
Cambodia invested several efforts and hard work in the recent six years to earn a title in the boxing event of the Southeast Asian Games on home soil. Their ex-Uzbek Abdulla Rajapov fulfilled the dreams of their management, the 21-year-old silver medallist from the ASBC Asian U22 Championships controlled the heavyweight (92kg) final against Vietnam’s Nguyen Manh Cuong.
