Aarati Bomjan, Minu Gurung and Lal Prasad Upreti are among the winners at the Nepal National Selection Tournament
The management of Nepal Boxing arranged their National Selection Tournament for the upcoming ASBC Asian Women’s & Men’s Elite Boxing Championships which will be starting in Amman, Jordan on November 28. The competition had three sessions and the eight winners have the chance to participate in the main event of the year.
Nepal hosted the Bir Ghaneshman Singh National Championships, the Inter-Provincial Championships and the Prakash Dahal Memorial Championships this year but only the National Selection Tournament can guarantee the tickets to Amman.
The Nepal National Selection Tournament is underway in the city of Lalitpur, which is famous for its ancient monuments, and it is located in the south-central part of the Kathmandu Valley at the altitude of 1,400 meters.
Aarati Bomjan is one of the new sensations in Nepal’s female boxing, she eliminated a favourite, Ramisha Shrestha in the semi-finals and she continued her winning path against H2O Athletics’ Manisha Rai at the women’s minimumweight (48kg).
Susmita Tamang, Nepal’s Asian U22 Boxing Championships silver medallist, did not attend in the National Selection Tournament therefore in her absence, her main local rival, Asmita Duwal took the title of the women’s light flyweight (50kg).
Minu Gurung is one of the veterans in Nepal’s boxing but the Asian Games competitor has still the speed and the motivation to beat the younger opponents. She moved up to the featherweight (57kg) and Narika Rai from the Nepal Police Corps was also not able to stop her actions in the final.
Lal Prasad Upreti is now Nepal’s best minimumweight (48kg) boxer among the men and he repeated his top performance once again in Lalitpur. The young hope controlled all of the exchanges against Bishesh Buda Magar and he has the right to represent Nepal in Amman.
Laxman Rai also has strong experience from the previous national competitions as Lal Prasad Upreti and he won the next important category, the men’s flyweight (51kg) in Lalitpur. Rai needed a top final round against Nawaraj Shahi but he succeeded against his rival winning the bout by 3:2 split decision.
One of the next younger hopes in Nepal’s boxing life, Khagendra Rokka Magar eliminated an international boxer, the former Asian Games competitor Bikram Pariyar at the lightweight (60kg) and he continued his winning series against Aayush Shrestha in the final of the competition.
Bhupendra Thapa Magar represented Nepal in the Asian Games and he had the routine to beat Sonam Sarki at the light welterweight (63.5kg) in Lalitpur. Dan Bahadur Darlami had a successful mission at the light middleweight (71kg) where he shocked Bikash Rama in the final with his strong combinations.
