Chinese Taipei’s women boxers dominated the Taipei City Cup where Japan’s teenage talents won three men weight classes
The eighth edition of the international Taipei City Cup was finished in Chinese Taipei where three competition days were held and 11 champions celebrated their titles after the finals. The gold medals in this prestigious international competition were achieved by boxers from Chinese Taipei, Japan and South Korea.
The first edition of the Taipei City Cup was held in 2011 and the local organizers have been hosted the competition yearly since that. Five women and six men winners are crowned in the new edition of the Taipei City Cup which was held just before the start of the boxing tournament of the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games.
Chinese Taipei, DPR Korea, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand and Sri Lanka are attended in the Taipei City Cup with strong teams. Most of the winners of the competition are young teenage talents who could be Asia’s next sensations in the upcoming years.
Chinese Taipei’s women boxing life turned into a new era in the recent years and their previously successful junior and youth boxers are now shining in the elite level. The first gold medal of the event was taken by Tsai Zi Han of Chinese Taipei who defeated New Zealand’s Nina White by large margin of differences in the final of the women’s light flyweight (48kg).
Chinese Taipei dominated the women part of the Taipei City Cup their talents bagged all of the five titles in the front of the home crowd. Wu Jia Yun won the flyweight (51kg) and following that Tao Ying Yu defeated New Zealand’s Te Mania Shelford in a close contest in the final of the featherweight (57kg). Tsui Hsueh Tzu caused a surprise when she beat her more experienced teammate Lin Li Wei Yi in the final of the lightweight (60kg).
Japan’s Asato Kataoka was silver medallist in the 2017 Japanese Youth National Sports Festival and joined to the elite age group only this January. The 19-year-old Japanese boxer competed at the very first time out of his home country but Kataoka was able to find his best rhythm in the final of the light flyweight (49kg) against Malaysia’s technician Sheikh Rahmatullah Ibrahim.
Chinese Taipei’s Hong Chuan Hsun had a successful youth career and he won the 2017 edition of the Taipei City Cup. The 19-year-old flyweight (52kg) boxer had to meet also with a Malaysian rival Muhammad Rasdenal Haikal who was quarter-finalist of the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships. Hong dominated the opening round and following his lethal combinations the referee stopped their final in the third round.
Japan’s second gold medal in the men’s part of the competition was achieved by another teenager Keisuke Matsumoto who was too strong for Chinese Taipei’s Lin Jun Sian. Japan’s Taiga Imanaga was silver medallist in the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships and achieved bronze in the ASBC Asian Confederation Youth Boxing Championships previously. The 19-year-old talent controlled all of the rounds against New Zealand’s Kasib Murdoch and won the final by unanimous decision.
Chinese Taipei’s Lin You eliminated DPR Korea’s Ryang Jang Tae in the semi-final of the light welterweight (64kg) and continued his winning path in the final against his teammate Hsieh Yu An. The last gold medal of the competition was achieved by Lee Shin Woo which was South Korea’s lone title in the Taipei City Cup.
