Interview with Philippines’ sport icon and official Mr. Ramon Fernandez
Mr. Ramon Fernandez was Philippines’ legendary basketball player who served their national team and the sport over two decades on the top. Since his active career was finished he has been supporting Philippines’ sport life, currently he is the Commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission which is the Office of the President of the Philippines.
Mr. Fernandez shared with us his thoughts about Philippines’ boxing life, the current competition, their Olympic programs and the future plans of the Philippine Sports Commission during his stay in the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships in Puerto Princesa.
“Philippines have got great traditions in boxing and we are proud of our previous results but we have to keep our eyes to the future. We are trying to support with our Chairman Mr. William Ramirez the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines through our long term programs in the Philippine Sports Commission.
Boxing is our No.1 sport in the Philippines and following our new decisions and possibilities I am sure we will be able to develop the sport in the country. We are planning to double the budget of the Association of Boxing Alliances of the Philippines in the new Olympic cycle to get even better results in the upcoming years.
We are focusing to the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games and its qualification process but our main goal is the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. We all know in the Philippine Sports Commission we have got the best options to get medals in the next Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games in boxing.
Personally I think if we support more our boxers Philippines financially and all aspects of the sports we could be shining in the Olympic Games in Tokyo. We have to improve the financial background of our favourite sport and I am sure it will be paid off already in Tokyo. Our boxers need several competitions in the international level, more experiences against the world’s best opponents and hard training camps to realize our targets.
I am expecting good results from our young Filipino boxers here in the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships but the most important thing is the positive experience here in Puerto Princesa. Hopefully they will win in the competition which would be a great future motivation for them,“ said Philippines’ sport icon Mr. Ramon Fernandez in the venue of the ASBC Asian Confederation Junior Boxing Championships.
