AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event – Day3 Report
Perfect day for China in the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event
The third competition day saw more than 40 women and men contests in two programs and also in two rings in the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qianan, China. Among the key boxers of our continent Kazakhstan’s Zhanibek Alimkhanuly, Philippines’ Charly Suarez, China’s Ren Cancan and India’s Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte all were in action on Day 3.
Women’s Flyweight class (51 kg):
India’s five-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Chungneijang Mary Kom Hmangte and Kazakhstan’s AIBA Women’s World Champion Nazym Kyzaybay had a big battle in the opening round of the weight class which was an early final in Qianan. The Indian boxer had to do her very best to beat Kazakhstan’s top woman athlete who moved up to the Flyweight class (51 kg) only last year.
China’s three-time AIBA Women’s World Champion Ren Cancan had a tough opponent in her opening preliminary battle as she had to meet with Japan’s AIBA Women’s World Boxing Championships bronze medallist Madoka Wada in Qianan. The London 2012 Olympic Games silver medallist proved her best once again and secured her place in the last eight.
Women’s Lightweight class (60 kg):
India’s former AIBA Women’s World Champion Sarita Devi Laishram returned to the world of boxing after her suspension but it was such a great comeback in Qianan. The veteran boxer found the best fighting distance quickly and controlled at least three rounds against Japan’s Tomoko Kugimiya on Day 3.
Vietnam’s Incheon 2014 Asian Games bronze medallist Luu Thi Duyen used her longer hands to eliminate New Zealand’s London 2012 Olympian Alexis Pritchard-Todd in an important contest of the category. Tajikistan’s London 2012 Olympic Games bronze medallist Mavzuna Chorieva was too strong for Afghanistan’s Danish-based Diana Nadim and also advanced to the quarter-finals in Qianan.
Men’s Bantamweight class (56 kg):
Tajikistan’s Oraz Afzolshoyev was silver medallist in the Liventsev Memorial Tournament in Belarus last month but he suffered a loss to Korea’s new national team member Lee Myeong Kwan which was a small surprise in Qianan. The 24-year-old Korean boxer will be fighting with India’s Seed No.1 Shiva Thapa in the second preliminary round which could be another spectacular bout in this category.
Men’s Lightweight class (60 kg):
Qatar’s APB boxer Hakan Erseker was quarter-finalist in the Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships who represented his new nation in his second big international tournament. The 21-year-old boxer was too strong for United Arab Emirates’ Ahmed Obaid and secured his place in the last eight.
Japan’s best boxer Daisuke Narimatsu was bronze medallist in the 2012 AIBA Asian Olympic Qualification Event in Astana but now he is even more experienced to realize his target win the Olympic spot for Rio. The 26-year-old Japanese boxer did a successful step for Rio as he was too strong for Kyrgyzstan’s new national team member Bek Kamchybekov in Qianan while the main sensation of the category was delivered by China’s Shan Jun who eliminated Tajikistan’s favourite Anvar Yunusov.
Men’s Welterweight class (69 kg):
Japan’s Ryuji Sato was silver medallist in several national events in the recent years behind London 2012 Olympian Yasuhiro Suzuki and following the retirement of his local rival he received the right to box in his first ever major competition. The 28-year-old Japanese boxer led 10:8 in all judges after the first round when his veteran Qatari rival Hzam Nabah was disqualified by the Italian referee while Tajikistan’s returning boxer Sharaf Davlatov also won his contest in Qianan.
Men’s Middleweight class (75 kg):
Kazakhstan’s AIBA World Champion and Incheon 2014 Asian Games winner Zhanibek Alimkhanuly was seeded as No.1 in Qianan and he proved top performance against Japan’s Makoto Takahashi in the preliminary round. The 23-year-old Kazakh boxer dominated his bout and will be fighting for the semi-finals with Kyrgyzstan’s Ilyar Akhmetov who eliminated New Zealand’s Ryan Scaife in his opening bout.
Turkmenistan’s Arslanbek Achilov moved down one weight class last year and won one big bout in the ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Bangkok. He opened his participation in Qianan with a triumph over Vietnam’s Southeast Asian Games winner Truong Dinh Hoang and advanced to the last eight where his next opponent will be Australia’s Daniel Lewis who won several international tournaments in the recent years.
Men’s Heavyweight class (91 kg):
Kyrgyzstan’s Sergei Parenko was bronze medallist in the 2013 ASBC Asian Confederation Boxing Championships in Amman and regained his place in the national team in the recent months. The 26-year-old boxer had to meet with Mongolia’s Tolek Erbolat who is three-time National Champion at home. Parenko had strict jabs in the second and third round which stopped the Kazakh-descent Mongolian athlete and advanced to the next round in Qianan where he will now meet with Tajikistan’s two-time Olympian Jakhon Qurbonov.
Men’s Super Heavyweight class (+91 kg):
Jordan’s Doha 2015 AIBA World Boxing Championships quarter-finalist Hussein Iashaish dictated a killing rhythm for Tajikistan’s Youth Olympian Siyovush Zukhurov who could not accept the level of the contest. The 21-year-old Jordan boxer dominated his battle against his Central Asian rival and advanced to the last eight in the highest weight class.
Day 4 Schedule:
Altogether 48 preliminary bouts will be held in the fourth competition day at the AIBA Asian & Oceanian Olympic Qualification Event in Qianan tomorrow.
