The whole ASBC management wishes Happy Syrian National Day to the Syrian Boxing Family in this important celebration.

Syria’s National Day commemorating the evacuation of the last French soldier at the end of the French mandate on Syria on 17 April in 1946 after the country’s proclamation of full independence on 27 September in 1941.

The French government proposed to depart on Good Friday on April 18 in 1946 but the Syrian officials and authorities opted for an earlier date.

The Evacuation Day is the most important national holiday in Syria which marks also the end of the colonization era in the historic Arab country. The Evacuation Day commemorates activities in the Umayyad Square in Damascus where thousands of people carrying the Syrian national flag.

Syria achieved its first top result in boxing in 1987 when their Hussein Kordija claimed a silver medal at the middleweight (75kg) in the 13th Asian Boxing Championships which was held in Kuwait City.

The Syrians put themselves into the spotlight in boxing when the country claimed a gold medal at the 1990 Asian Games in Beijing, China where Mayen Khanji celebrated that success. Before that, he achieved a silver medal at the 1989 Asian Boxing Championships which took place in the Chinese capital.

Syria’s first ever Asian Elite Championships’ title was taken by Nasser Al-Shami at the heavyweight in the Puerto Princesa 2004 edition. Syria had strong results in several further competitions such as the 2017 Islamic Solidarity Games, and a few editions of the Mediterranean Games as well.
