The Sri Lankan Clifford Cup started with the country’s first R&J Course since 2011

The Clifford Cup will close the year in Sri Lanka’s boxing life and will be held at Sahas Uyana, Kandy, between December 18 and 22. Before the start of the competition, their 1-star Referee & Judge Course began in the city of Kandy.

The President of Sri Lanka Boxing Mr. Anuruddha Shanaka Bandara is proud to host this important R&J Course which is the first in Sri Lanka’s boxing life since 2011. The main goal for the course is to make more professional events in Sri Lanka in the future and

Kandy is located in the middle of the island and it is famous of its heritages, cultural sides, spice gardens, fantastic nature and the tea plantations on its surroundings.

Mr. John Waith of Wales is the Instructor of the 1-star Referee & Judge Course before and during the Clifford Boxing Cup. The theoretical part of the course is underway and the practical section will be the Clifford Cup itself for all of the participants.

The participants will get information from the international rules, standards, new experiences from one of the most experienced officials to increase their skills in the next Sri Lankan competitions.

The number of the candidates for the 1-star R&J degrees is 25 in the course, including the former Asian Women’s Championships bronze medallist Shiromali Weerarathna and multiple female champion, Sithari Sandareka.

The traditional event, the Clifford Cup and the Youth Boxing Championships will follow the R&J Course in Kandy. There are altogether 38 female and 102 male youth entries among the 17 and 18-year-old boxers.

The number of the elite female boxers is 37 in Kandy and all of their best hopes will be there in the start of the competition. Additionally, the male boxers can compete in the official weight categories and altogether 78 boys will be fighting for the titles.

Sri Lanka’s best male boxer, the 21-year-old Umayanga Mihiran has just claimed a fantastic bronze medal at the recent ASBC Asian Elite Boxing Championships in Chiang Mai, Thailand and the local No.1 will compete also at the Clifford Cup. Several of the top national team members will also participate in the last national event of the year in Kandy.

The 12-strong Sri Lankan national team, the top squads from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Police and the St. Sylvester’s Boxing Club are expecting to bring top quality of boxing in the new edition of the Clifford Cup.

The Clifford Cup will start at 2pm in all of the competition days and the PEO Sports TV will be the live broadcaster of the elite and youth events.
