Nepal selected four young boxers to Chiang Mai
Nepal will send two women and two men boxers to the upcoming ASBC Asian Elite Men and Women Boxing Championships which will be held in Chiang Mai, Thailand from November 28 until December 12.
Nepal claimed a historic silver medal in the 2023 ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Bangkok, Thailand and the country sent also full squad to the Asian Games.
Their coach, the former Asian Games bronze medallist Mr. Deepak Maharjan, selected four boxers to compete in Chiang Mai following their National Selection Tournament which took place in Nepal last month.
Aarati Bomjan made a strong effort in the Nepal National Selection Tournament and she was selected to participate in Chiang Mai. Aarati Bomjan is one of the new sensations in Nepal’s female boxing, she eliminated a favourite, Ramisha Shrestha in the semi-finals of the National Selections and she continued her winning path against H2O Athletics’ Manisha Rai at the women’s minimumweight (48kg).
Susmita Tamang, Nepal’s Asian U22 Boxing Championships silver medallist, did not attend in the National Selection Tournament therefore in her absence, the main local rival, Asmita Duwal took the title of the women’s light flyweight (50kg) in the event. Asmita Duwal was runner-up in several of the national events in 2023 but she can show her skills in Chiang Mai following the decision of the management.
The 21-year-old Lal Prasad Upreti is now Nepal’s best minimumweight (48kg) boxer among the men and he repeated his top performance once again in Lalitpur during the National Selections. The young hope controlled all of the exchanges against Bishesh Buda Magar and he has the right to represent Nepal in North Thailand.
The 23-year-old Laxman Rai also has strong experience from the previous national competitions as Lal Prasad Upreti and he won the next important category, the men’s flyweight (51kg) in Lalitpur during the National Selections. Rai needed a top final round against Nawaraj Shahi but he succeeded against his rival winning the bout by 3:2 split decision to take the ticket to Chiang Mai.
