Interview with Mrs. Liang Yuan, the TD of the recent ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championships

The Technical Delegate of the Paris Olympic Games, Mrs. Liang Yuan of China was also the TD of the recent ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolgirls & Schoolboys Boxing Championships which was held in Al Ain, United Arab Emirates. The Asian Boxing Confederation arranged an interview with China’s most successful boxing official after the event.

Mrs. Liang Yuan worked dozens of events in the recent fifteen years to support the successes of the international events including Olympics, World Championships, Asian Games, ASBC Asian Boxing Championships, Olympic Boxing Qualifying Events and other multisport events as well.

What was your opinion about the organization of the ASBC Asian Junior & Schoolboys & Schoolgirls Boxing Championships in Al Ain?

The event was fantastic and meaningful which provided a platform for young boxers to fight with different style of boxers coming from various countries and exchange their views in technique and tactics. It is very important for young kids to open their mind and accumulate practical experiences. The organization was high level and standard, although some parts seems simple due to lack of personnel, for example, only one volunteer assisting in each corner. The full of ceremonial sense especially in face off, entering the ring, awarding the young kids were big event experiences for them.

What was the difference between your work as TD in the Paris Olympics and Al Ain?

There was no difference between Paris and Al Ain in Technical Delegate’s function and responsibility. As a matter of fact, the Olympic Games is the highest level and standard competition in the world. The working procedure and requirement is more precise and strict in the Olympic Games. Not any fault could be excused, so more pressure on all of the officials. For it, I did a lot of preparation work in advance.

What were the main strengths and difficulties of this event in Al Ain?

Main Strengths: A group of talented boxers, a group of passionate and dedicated coaches, experienced professional ITOs, RJs team, supportive LOC, NTOs and Volunteers.

Difficulties: Long day working about 10-12 hours per day was hard and challenge for all of the ITOs and RJs.

Which nations surprised You Mostly with its performance in Al Ain?

Tajikistan and Iran were much better in technique than before, their strong and powerful boxers are just the old image about them.

Did you recognize new top talents in Al Ain?

Several boxers for example boxers from the schoolboys 33kg weight class from Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan, one schoolgirl from Chinese Taipei and one junior boxer from Uzbekistan, Elyor Rustamov, awarding the best boxer trophy.

What do You think about the work of your ITOs in Al Ain?

Two words to describe “professional and reliable” which was based on hard work, and despite it was not easy, but we all did a good job.

How did You find the level of the work of the Referees & Judges?

I am very happy to see a lot of new faces and a lot of RJs coming from countries not strongly developed in boxing. The judging was gradually toward consistency during the competition.

Could You please introduce China’s Boxing life after the successful Olympics (plans, changes, upcoming events)?

Sorry, it is a really big topic, I can answer that in another interview.

What do You expect in the upcoming Belt & Road Tournament which will be held in China soon?

This year is just a good beginning. We hope this Belt& Road Tournament will be hosted year by year and turn to a traditional event which people will remember every year and a festival for young boxers to enjoy.

Which will be your next event as an official? I have absolutely no idea. I just enjoy the current rest period.
