Jayathissa and Angelo won the cash prizes as the best boxers of the Sri Lankan Novice Boxing Championships

The Sri Lankans arranged their National Novice Boxing Championships at the Royal MAS Arena in Colombo. Eleven women and thirteen men boxers earned their gold medals in this national event in the Sri Lankan capital.

Two featherweight (57kg) talents such as St. Sylvester Boxing Club’s S.P.P. Angelo and Up Hill Boxing Club’s top female hope, R.D. Nirushika P. Jayathissa were named as the best boxers of the Sri Lankan National Novice Boxing Championships.

The Sri Lankans had a fantastic result in the recent 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event where their 20-year-old future star, Umayanga Mihiran won two preliminary contests and he was near to qualify for the Paris Olympics.

Mr. Rohan De Silva, the President of the Sri Lankan Badminton Federation, was the chief guest in the finals of the competition. He presented the special awards with the IBA Board of Director Mr. Dian Gomes in the finals of the exciting competition.

The Sri Lankan Novice Boxing Championships was five-days long in Colombo where money prizes were given to the best boxers for the very first time.

A 19-year-old boxer, the 2023 Sri Lankan Youth National Champion R.D. Nirushika P. Jayathissa made a strong performance in the final of the women’s featherweight (57kg) in the national event where she outpointed M. Virajini for the gold medal.

Hanwella Rajasinghe Boxing Club’s M.D.K. Devindi had a closer female final at the light flyweight (50kg), she had to do her very best against Air Force’s Youth National Champion Sanduni Imesha in the title contest.

Another 19-year-old former silver medallist, S.P.P. Angelo won the best male boxer trophy due to his fantastic knockout victory over an Air Force athlete, B. Chandrapala in the final of the men’s featherweight (57kg).

M.M. Paris, who trains with S.P.P. Angelo at the St. Sylvester Boxing Club won one of the closest finals of the Sri Lankan Novice National Boxing Championships, he needed a great last round against Army’s A. Adhikari to win the men’s welterweight (67kg) final by 3:2 split decision.
