Sachin, Paalam, Seyitbek Uulu, Iashaish and Jongjoho are all semi-finalists in Bangkok

Sachin Siwach, Carlo Paalam, Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu, Hussein Iashaish and Weerapon Jongjoho are all advanced to the semi-finals at the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok during the evening session.

Sri Lanka’s Umayanga Mihiran already won two contests in Thailand’s capital and he became his nation’s first ever boxer who could reach this stage in a qualification event. The 21-year-old Sri Lankan was not only strong in the first round but he had smart boxing against Iran’s Mahdi Parvizi in their flyweight (51kg) contest. His Iranian opponent landed a heavy jab in the second round and the referee stopped the bout confirming Parvizi’s RSC triumph.

DPR Korea’s So Chon Ryong, the Asian Games bronze medallist, started his Round of 16 bout better than Venezuela’s Keymberth Gonzalez in the battle of the 2002 born boxers. The South American knocked down So in the second round but the North Korean had the amazing stamina in the third to turn back this flyweight (51kg) bout. So proved that he is good in closer ranges as well and the North Korean advanced to the last eight in Bangkok.

Mongolia’s Gan-Erdene Gankhuyag was not enough shape in the first round against Malaysia’s Asian U22 bronze medallist Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ariffin but he turned up the heat in the second. The 31-year-old Mongolian is aiming for his second Olympic spot after the 2016 Rio de Janeiro edition and he worked hard to accomplish his goal against a well-developed Malaysian opponent.

India’s Amit Panghal was not able to deliver his best performance in the Round of 32 but finally he had a tight success over a young Mexican rival. The Asian Games winner experienced Indian faced an even older opponent, South Korea’s No.1, Kim In Kyu and this time he was much better. Amit was patient and he waited for the best moments to land his shots against such a tall opponent and he made the quarter-finals in Bangkok.

The men’s featherweight (57kg) has three Olympic spots and the winners of today’s quarter-finals are not 100% quota holders yet. India’s next boxer in action was their Youth World Champion Sachin Siwach who tried to work and land shots at least twice as France’s 29-year-old Samul Kistohurry. The Indian looked fresh and energetic today and he eliminated a World bronze medallist boxer who has 14 years of international routine.

Kyrgyzstan’s World bronze medallist Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu used his outstanding technical skills to keep the best distance against Azerbaijan’s ex-Russian Shamil Askerov and his tactics worked well enough to bow out his rival. The 28-year-old Kyrgyz is now near to qualify for the Olympics at the men’s featherweight (57kg) where Philippines’ Carlo Palaam is also a semi-finalists following his success over Dominican Republic’s Jose Luis De Los Santos.

Jordan’s Hussein Iashaish started slowly against France’s Yojerlin Cesar in the first round as in several of his contest at the light heavyweight (80kg). The Asian Champion and two-time Olympian Iashaish made an excellent comeback in the second and third rounds to win their quarter-final bout. Thailand’s Weerapon Jongjoho is the next Asian semi-finalist in this weight class, the World bronze medallist local star eliminated Poland’s Jakub Straszewski.

Kyrgyzstan’s last Olympian boxer, Erkin Adylbek Uulu won his opener easily and the 33-year-old veteran knew his opponent’s weak points in the Round of 16 at the heavyweight (92kg). Adylbek Uulu stopped Boxing Refugee Team’s Aryan Saedpanah’s attacks and he had the massive advantage on the scorecards before the last round. Saedpanah left Iran and he trains in Spain currently as a refugee but Adylbek Uulu was too experienced for him.
