Surprise victories for Malaysia and Sri Lanka at the men’s flyweight

Malaysia and Sri Lanka exceeded their levels at the men’s flyweight (51kg) in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok today.

Altogether 579 boxers from 133 countries are participating in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok where the total number of the available quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics is 51. The number of the coaches, officials and team delegations members is 610 in Thailand.

India’s Parveen Hooda achieved a bronze medal in the recent Asian Games but she lost her quota for Paris due a doping issue therefore her teammate, Jaismine Lamboriya competes at the women’s featherweight (57kg) in Bangkok. The 23-year-old Indian was taller than Azerbaijan’s Mahsati Hamzayeva Aghamaliyeva and she kept her opponent on long successfully to win this Round of 32 bout.

China qualified five of their top women boxers therefore only Xu Zichun is their female participant in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. The Chinese boxer had a neighbouring rival, Paek Jin Hyang from North Korea who had the same patient style of boxing in this featherweight (57kg) contest. The 30-year-old Xu was better in their chess game and she advanced to the last 16 in Bangkok beating a top opponent.

Vietnam’s Nguyen Huyen Tran met Fiji’s first ever female boxer in their national team, the 19-year-old Jasmine Florina Daunakamakama in the Round of 32 at the women’s featherweight (57kg). The Vietnamese competed in the last two qualification events as well and those experiences helped her to win this close contest by 4:1 split decision.

Thailand’s former Asian Games bronze medallist and Asian Championships runner-up Nilawan Techasuep returned to the national team after one year and she replaced Preedakamon Tintabthai since the Busto Arsizio event. The tall featherweight (57kg) boxer controlled the first and second rounds against Croatia’s Nikolina Cacic and despite the attacks of her opponent in the third, Techasuep managed to win this contest.

Sri Lanka’s Umayanga Mihiran is only 20-year-old but he has been competing in the international stage since 2019 and he opened his campaign in Bangkok with a triumph. The Sri Lankan surprised Morocco’s Hamza Essaadi with his footwork and Mihiran had the advantage on the scorecards after two rounds. The young Sri Lankan felt the tempo well enough and he had the stamina as well in the third to eliminate his second opponent at the men’s flyweight (51kg).

DPR Korea’s Asian Games bronze medallist So Chon Ryong was the favourite against Gabon’s veteran professional boxer Franck Mombey in the next Round of 32 contest at the flyweight (51kg). His African opponent was much stronger but the North Korean had the unpredictable movements and Mombey could not catch him with heavy shots therefore So’s counter-punches controlled the bout.

Malaysia’s Muhammad Abdul Qaiyum Bin Ariffin is their best elite boxer in the national team and the ASBC Asian U22 bronze medallist exceeded all of the previous expectations with his performance today. The 23-year-old Malaysian controlled the first and second rounds against Ireland’s Sean Mari and he had the advantages on the scorecards. The Irish ringside abandoned the contest in the beginning of the third round and the Malaysian joined the last 16 at the flyweight (51kg).

South Korea’s Kim In Kyu used his longer reach well enough against Guatemala’s Carlos Ramirez and he could save fuel for the later actions. Jordan’s Huthaifa Eshish made a fantastic U-turn in his preliminary contest against Poland’s 19-year-old Nikolas Pawlik and his third round guaranteed his success today. India’s No.1, Amit Panghal had a crucial battle against Mexico’s Mauricio Ruiz in the last bout of the session and finally he succeeded with his last round.
