Afghanistan’s Asian U22 silver medallist Qais Alizada continues his pathway in Bangkok
Afghanistan sent one female and six male boxers to the upcoming 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Bangkok, Thailand which will open with its first busy competition day on May 24.
The 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event is the last opportunity for all of the competitors to earn quotas for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Afghanistan sent boxers to the Asian Games and also to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event which is a huge commitment from their National Federation despite the situation in their country.
A veteran bantamweight (54kg) boxer, the 36-year-old Lala Kargar will be their lone female squad member in the 2nd World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. Afghanistan formed its women’s national team in 2008 and since then several of their female athletes competed in major championships.
Their flyweight (51kg) Bilal Safari will be turning 22 later this year and he arrived to Bangkok from the United Kingdom where he lives and trains in an excellent environment. Mohammad Mehdi Sahak competed in the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio and he is ready to show his progress in Bangkok.
The light heavyweight (80kg) hopeful, Qais Alizada is the new hero in Afghanistan, the 19-year-old US-based boxer learnt a lot from coach Mr. Charles Leverette and he achieved an extraordinary silver medal at the Asian U22 Boxing Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan just two weeks ago.
Silab Noori is a 22-year-old talent but he competed in the Asian Boxing Championships already in 2021 and following that he left the country to Germany. He competed in the German National Championships with impressive success and the heavyweight (92kg) boxer could be a surprise in Bangkok.
Obaidullah Yackobi (63.5kg) and the Asian U22 Boxing Championships competitor Ali Maisam Alizada (71kg) are their further national team members.
