Nawaf Al-Zahmi was the Best Boxer at the Zayed Sports Tournament in Abu Dhabi

One of the most important boxing competitions in the United Arab Emirates, the Zayed Sports Tournament was held in the city of Abu Dhabi during the Ramadan. The winner of the men’s featherweight (57kg), Nawaf Ali Khamees Al-Zahmi was awarded the Best Boxer Trophy at the Zayed Sports Tournament.

The event was established in 1997 in honour of Mr. Sheikh Zayed and hosts in several sports including boxing as well. The Abu Dhabi Sports Centre became the Best Team with coach Mr. Abdullah in the Zayed Sports Tournament, while Mr. Youssef Benjennaa was named as the Best Referee & Judge of this elite competition.

The Secretary General of the Asian Boxing Confederation (ASBC), Mr. Ali Salameh visited the Zayed Sports Tournament and also several Board members of the United Arab Emirates Boxing Federation.

The United Arab Emirates sent their boxers to the Asian Games and also to the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event. Their management plans to send their boxers to all of the important elite, youth, junior and schoolboys competitions in 2024.

Women’s boxing launched in the United Arab Emirates in 2018 and since then their female athletes competed in the level of the ASBC Asian Championships as well.

Jawaher Gareeb has international experience during her career but she claimed only bronze medal at the women’s flyweight in Abu Dhabi. The winners of the female competition were Aisha Hisham Mohammed, Iran’s first successful woman boxer, Nastaran Fathi and a personal trainer from Dubai, the Belarusian Aleksandra Sitnikova.

Kuwait’s Asian Youth Championships competitor Rashed Al-Mutairi won the first male final, he defeated Adnan Bin Sultan at the men’s flyweight (51kg).

Fujairah’s Nawaf Ali Khamees Al-Zahmi is one of the UAE national team members who competed in the recent Asian Games, World Boxing Championships and Arab Sports Games as well. The 20-year-old featherweight (57kg) boxer controlled all of his contests in Abu Dhabi including his final over Nicolas Saliba.

A Kazakh boxer, Kuanish Yerzhanov won the lightweight (60kg) final against Bahrain’s Omar Bu Dahi in the Zayed Sports Tournament. Danylo Honcharak was born in Ukraine and he had the routine to beat Eyad Reda in the next final at the light welterweight (63.5kg).

The next event in the United Arab Emirates will be another international competition, the Ramadan Games in Dubai this weekend.
