Xu Zichun and Danabieke Bayikewuzi lead Team China at the 1st World Olympic Qualifier

Six of the top Chinese boxers including Xu Zichun and Danabieke Bayikewuzi will be there at the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event in Busto Arsizio, Italy.

China was the host of the recent Asian Games in the city of Hangzhou where their boxers secured seven flight tickets for Paris. China lacked any gold medals in the boxing tournament of the Tokyo Olympics therefore the country’s target is at least one title in the upcoming Paris edition.

Five of their top female boxers such as Wu Yu (50kg), Chang Yuan (54kg), Yan Wenlu (60kg), Yang Liu (66kg) and Li Qian (75kg) all qualified for the Olympic Games and they started their preparations for Paris at the Strandja Memorial Tournament successfully.

The World silver medallist Tuohetaerbieke Tanglatihan had a seriously hard road for the quota at the men’s light heavyweight (80kg), but he succeeded on home soil. Han Xuezhen caused a huge sensation with his quota at the men’s heavyweight (92kg) in Hangzhou, he was not a favourite for that place in the Asian Games.

Xu Zichun will be the sole female boxer in the 1st World Olympic Boxing Qualifying Event but she expects a hard job in Busto Arsizio where only two quotas are available at the women’s featherweight (57kg).

Zhang Jiamao was a quarter-finalist in the recent Asian Games as a newcomer in the elite national team. He earned gold medals in the recent two editions of the Chinese National Championships and Zhang has the technical skills to beat top rivals as well.

Liu Ping qualified for the Youth Olympics in 2014 and after seven poor years, he regained his place in the elite national team. The 28-year-old featherweight (57kg) boxer was bronze medallist in the Asian Games and he lost to only Uzbekistan’s superstar Abdumalik Khalokov in that event.

China’s light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer, Wang Xiangyang is not experienced enough in the international stage yet but he reached the Top8 in the Asian Games. Zhao Mengyang moved down to the light middleweight (71kg) and after the 2023 World Boxing Championships, he has the right to compete for Team China.

One of their top male boxers, Danabieke Bayikewuzi lives and trains in the Xinjiang region and he progressed so rapidly in the previous one and half year. The powerful super heavyweight (+92kg) boxer was quarter-finalist at the 2023 World Boxing Championships and he defeated several top athletes last year.
