Huang vs. Petecio for the gold medal at the women’s featherweight in La Nucia

An Asian dream final has been realized at the women’s featherweight (57kg) in the Boxam Elite Tournament in La Nucia, Spain today.

Altogether 208 boxers are there in the event and there will be 183 bouts in the five-days long competition in La Nucia. Boxers who were born between 1984 and 2005 are eligible to compete in the Boxam Elite Tournament.

Bahrain, Belgium, Chinese Taipei, England, France, Hungary, Iceland, India, Ireland, Italy, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Mali, Mexico, Palestine, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, the Refugee Team, Romania, Scotland, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand, Trinidad & Tobago, Uzbekistan, and Wales are the participating countries in La Nucia.

Kazakhstan’s Aigerim Sattibayeva, the experienced southpaw, was too smart for Spain’s Clara Cortes in the first round and she had the advantage in all of the judges’ scorecards. The Kazakh became the first boxer in the Boxam Tournament who joined the finals of the competition at the women’s minimumweight (48kg).

Kazakhstan’s next boxer in action, Nazym Kyzaibay, the two-time World Champion, used the best tactics against Spain’s World Championships bronze medallist Laura Fuertes in the first round. The 30-year-old Kazakh landed several clear jabs in the second round and she looked untouchable in this contest therefore Kyzaibay will meet Philippines’ Aira Villegas for the title of the light flyweight (50kg).

Chinese Taipei’s two-time World Champion Huang Hsiao Wen had a very difficult opponent, Spain’s promising Jennifer Fernandez who eliminated a Kazakh star in the previous stage but the East Asian managed to win their tactical semi-final. Huang’s next opponent will be another star at the featherweight (57kg), Philippines’ Nesthy Petecio who eliminated Switzerland’s Ana-Marija Milisic.

India’s Manju Bamboriya had a strong pedigree in the international stage and she impressed once again in the battle of the southpaw boxers, beating England’s National Champion Dion Burman with smart boxing. The Indian will now meet for the title of the women’s welterweight (66kg) Belgium’s European Games silver medallist veteran, Oshin Derieuw.

Chinese Taipei’s Chen Nien Chin boxed this time at the light middleweight (70kg) and she had a strong semi-final opponent, India’s Astha Pahwa today. The former World Champion Chen dictated the tempo from the first seconds and she will be boxing for the gold medal Kazakhstan’s 2017 Asian Champion Madina Nurshayeva.

Philippines’ Rogen Ladon is a veteran boxer at the men’s flyweight (51kg) which supported him in the most difficult moments against Mexico’s Youth World Champion Ari Bonilla. The Filipino was patient, waited for the best attacking angles and his smart boxing means that he can meet now Hungary’s Istvan Szaka, who eliminated a European Champion today.

Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu, the World bronze medallist, had disadvantage after the first round against Scotland’s 19-year-old Isa Akram but he had the routine and the knowledge to turn back their lightweight (60kg) semi-finals in La Nucia. The Kyrgyz boxer will be meeting for the gold Mali’s Abdoul Karim Bathily following his Hungarian opponent, Roland Veres injured in their meeting.

Uzbekistan’s powerful trio, Mujibullo Tursunov (63.5kg), Khavasbek Asadullayev (71kg) and Turabek Khabibullayev (80kg) had experienced rivals in the day of the semi-finals but all of them managed to get through to the finals of the Boxam Tournament. Asadullayev eliminated a local talent, Frank Martinez following he switched into a higher tempo in the second round.
