Chinese Taipei and Kyrgyzstan won key quarter-final contests at the Boxam Tournament

Top boxers from Chinese Taipei and Kyrgyzstan won several exciting quarter-finals of the Boxam Tournament in La Nucia, Spain today.

Nesthy Petecio, the Olympic Games silver medallist, met a 10-years-younger French rival, Sthelyne Grosy in the quarter-finals of the women’s featherweight (57kg). The experienced Filipina was smaller than her 21-year-old French rival but she gained the control in the end of the first round and eliminated a good opponent.

Chinese Taipei’s two-time World Champion Huang Hsiao Wen used her longer hands to land her effective counter-punches therefore she eliminated Hungary’s Szabina Szucs at the women’s featherweight (57kg). Huang kept her Hungarian opponent on long in all of the three rounds and she won a remarkable contest in the quarter-finals.

Her teammate, Wu Shih Yi has already qualified for the Paris Olympics through the Asian Games and she opened her campaign also well enough, keeping the best distance against Kazakhstan’s Hungary-based Vladislava Kukhta. Chinese Taipei’s lightweight (60kg) star had brilliant technical skills and speed in this bout therefore she is also a guaranteed finalist in the Boxam Tournament. Chinese Taipei’s best male boxer, Kan Chia Wei dominated his middleweight (75kg) contest against a newcomer Icelandic hopeful.

Kyrgyzstan’s Munarbek Seyitbek Uulu was bronze medallist at the 2023 World Boxing Championships and after that historic achievement, he amazed in the quarter-finals of the Boxam Tournament. Following his RSC success against India’s Dikshant Dahiya, he will now meet for the title bout, Scotland’s 19-year-old Isa Akram in the semi-finals.

India’s Amit Kumar is not the most experienced boxer in the international stage yet but he had a brilliant fighting spirit in the third day of boxing. The Indian light welterweight (63.5kg) boxer exceeded all of the expectations and he eliminated a Paris Olympian, Mexico’s Miguel Angel Martinez in a hectic fight.

Uzbekistan’s Ruslan Abdullayev, the light welterweight (63.5kg) World Champion, showed more from his impressive skills today and his performance was enough to beat Ireland’s John Paul Hale. His teammate in the same weight class, Mujibullo Tursunov had a more difficult job in the next fight, but he had the stamina to beat Thailand’s Khunatip Pidnuch in the closest contests of the day.

Thailand’s ASBC Asian Champion at the welterweight (67kg), Bunjong Sinsiri, is one of the strongest punchers in the whole world in this category. Spain’s 19-year-old Ganda Soucko Coulibaly is a very talented boy but the veteran Thai’s strength decided their quarter-final contest in the second part of the session.

Uzbekistan’s two top light heavyweight (80kg) boxers, the Youth World Champion Turabek Khabibullayev and the ASBC Asian U22 Champion Jasurbek Yuldashev met each other already in the quarter-finals. The battle of the southpaw boxers was won by the 19-year-old Khabibullayev who had a great finish in their meeting today. Kyrgyzstan’s Sagyn Satybaldy Uulu had a crucial battle against Belgium’s Idris Leganase but the 20-year-old boxer worked well enough to win this light heavyweight (80kg) battle. The Asian bronze medallist Omurbek Bekzhigit Uulu, another Kyrgyz prospect, defeated a Polish opponent, Jakub Straszewski at the cruiserweight (86kg) in the end of the session.
