Boranbek won the opening contest of the second day

Mongolia’s Luvsanperenlei Munkherdene opened the first round against Kazakhstan’s Beksultan Boranbek as a storm and the referee counted the local boxer. Boranbek, who trains with the experienced coach Mr. Mukhtar Berdimbetov, increased his tempo after this shocking experience and controlled the next two minutes in their fight. The Kazakh boxer had different tempo in the second round and the referee from Fiji stopped the youth minimumweight (48kg) contest following his serious head shots.

Nguyen and Nakayama made strong impressions

Vietnam’s Nguyen Trung Khan was smaller than his opponent from Kuwait, Abdullah J.N. Abdullah but his energetic shots guaranteed his advantage after three minutes. The Vietnamese boxer’s pressure was even bigger in the second round and he caught his Kuwaiti opponent in the corner finishing the bout. Japan’s Seiya Nakayama won several high school events in his homeland and he used his longer reach well against Philippines’ Jay Bryan Baricuatro in the first round. The Japanese waited for the attacks of the Filipino boxer and he countered Baricuatro with perfect timing to succeed in Astana.

Sufijonov defeated his Kyrgyz rival once again

Tajikistan’s Meroj Sufijonov had a perfect record in 2023 before the championships but he could expect a hard battle against Kyrgyzstan’s Zafarbek Kamilov. The Tajik defeated his Kyrgyz opponent in the final of the Commonwealth of Independent States Youth Games this August. Sufijonov’s right-handed hooks were dangerous but Kamilov also landed a powerful jab in the middle of the opening round. The 18-year-old Tajik had excellent second and third rounds in their re-match and he won it once again, eliminating his main rival in Astana.

Philippines’ Ronel Suyom was the star of the men’s flyweight on Day2

Philippines’ Ronel Suyom was the main surprise at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships in La Nucia where he claimed a silver medal in his first ever international competition. The 18-year-old Filipino moved up to the flyweight (51kg) and he used his tricky style of boxing in the first round against Vietnam’s Dao Van Cam. Suyom landed clear shots whenever he wanted and his unpredictable footwork was a clear way to the success over the Vietnamese boy.

Thailand’s World Youth medallist won a tough contest

Thailand’s Wacharakorn Junthasorn earned a bronze medal at the 2022 Youth World Boxing Championships and the 18-year-old boxer used his strong left-handed hooks to stop Kyrgyzstan’s Temirkhan Daniyarov. The Kyrgyz was taller than his Thai opponent but he moved forward which looked perfect for Junthasorn. Daniyarov worked hard in the third round and he had more shots but the Thai won the battle of the southpaw boxers in Astana and joined the last eight at the flyweight (51kg).

Mashkentayev turned back his difficult contest

Delguunsaikhan Kharkhuu was born in a boxing family, his elder brothers are stars in the elite national team. The 18-year-old Mongolian opened the first round better than Kazakhstan’s Islam Mashkentayev and he used his longer reach well enough. The Mongolian southpaw overcame the Kazakh in the first and second rounds but Mashkentayev caught him with a heavy shot in the middle of the bout. Following that turning point, Mashkentayev moved forward without any stoppage and he was able to win the contest by split decision.
