DPR Korea will be making a return in the Asian Games after four years of hiatus in the international events
DPR Korea will return to the boxing map after nearly four years of hiatus at the upcoming Asian Games in Hangzhou. The North Koreans will compete with nine boxers in the Asian Games and their female team is still in the world-class level.
The North Koreans claimed seven gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals in the boxing history of the Asian Games. The North Koreans have four national events every year and based on these results, their management selected the best options for the Games.
North Korea’s most experienced female boxer, Pang Chol Mi was Women’s World Champion, Asian Games silver medallist in 2018 and following her last competitions four years ago, she plans to return at the women’s bantamweight (54kg) in Hangzhou. Pang has brilliant technical skills with long range tactics and she could be one of the sensations in her new category.
The 2015 Women’s Junior World Champion Won Un Gyong moved up two categories since her last appearance in the international stage and the 23-year-old boxer will compete at the lightweight (60kg) in Hangzhou following her last actions at the 2019 Thailand Open International Boxing Tournament.
Kang Su Hyang earned her first national title as a junior boxer still in 2017 and the 21-year-old talent will be making her elite debut at the light flyweight (50kg) in the Asian Games. Paek Jin Hyang (57kg) and the 24-year-old Hwang Hyo Sun (66kg) also involved to their female squad.
The men’s flyweight (51kg) is always strong in North Korea, their new national team member will be the 21-year-old So Chon Ryong who earned his first gold medal in our sport still in 2016 but he does not have too much international experiences yet.
O Tae Bom was a newcomer in the North Korean national team in the Jakarta 2018 Asian Games but he reached the quarter-finals. The 25-year-old boxer will be making a return in a new category at the men’s featherweight (57kg) in his second Asian Games.
North Korea’s light welterweight (63.5kg) hope, Choe Chol Man is another experienced male boxer in the team with tournament titles in the second part of the 2010s. The 24-year-old Ryang Jang Thae (71kg) was registered to compete for DPR Korea in the Asian Games but he lives and trains in Japan.
