One month left until the start of the boxing tournament of the Asian Games

Only one month left until the start of the Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 until October 8. The first competition day is September 24 in Hangzhou and record numbers of boxers are expected to participate in the Asian Games.

The Summer Asian Games is the largest multisport event not only in the continent but in the world as well with the participation of more than 12,000 athletes. Hangzhou is the third Chinese city to host an Asian Games after the Beijing 1990 and the Guangzhou 2010 editions.

The boxing tournament of the Asian Games is the most important competitions for the Asian National Federations in the year of 2023 due this is the first Olympic Qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Altogether 34 quotas including 20 female and 14 male will found their owners during the Asian Games.

Some of the promising boxing nations such as Jordan, Vietnam, Chinese Taipei and Nepal are planning to send their biggest ever delegations to the Asian Games. The top boxing countries as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, China, India, Thailand, South Korea, Mongolia, Japan, Tajikistan, Philippines, Kyrgyzstan and Iran all will participate with their best line-ups.

Boxing was officially involved to the program of the Asian Games in 1954 and since then South Korea earned 59 gold medals mostly in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. Thailand claimed 20 gold medals in boxing while the Central Asian boxing powers, Uzbekistan took 19 and Kazakhstan 16 titles since their debut in 1994. Philippines, Japan and China each achieved more than 10 gold medals in the boxing history of the Asian Games.

Hangzhou was officially awarded the right to host the 2022 Asian Games in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on September 2015 during the 34th Olympic Council of Asia’s General Assembly. The date of the Asian Games was September 10-25, 2022 originally but the OCA and the Hangzhou Local Organizing Committee had to re-schedule it.

The Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games have officially postponed following the decision of the Olympic Council of Asia on May 2022. The Olympic Council of Asia confirmed the new date of the 2023 Asian Games in a press conference on July 2022.
