Zeinullinov’s KO opened the 2nd Elorda Cup in Astana
The Kazakhstan Boxing Federation’s main international event, the Elorda Cup started with the Opening Ceremony and the first competition day in Astana. Kazakhstan’s 26-year-old Yertugan Zeinullinov knocked out his local opponent, delighting the crowd on Day1.
The organizers of the Elorda Cup are the Department of Physical Culture and Sports of Astana City and the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation. The Elorda Cup will be a money prize event, all of the gold medallists will earn 700 USD, the silver medallists 400 USD and the two boxers who will take the bronze medals each will get 200 USD from the local organizers.
The Vice-President of the Asian Boxing Confederation and the Kazakhstan Boxing Federation Mr. Aziz Kozhambetov and Kazakhstan’s former Olympic Games winner Mr. Serik Sapiyev also attended in the Grand Opening Ceremony.
Bahrain, China, India, Japan, host Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Serbia, Tajikistan, Thailand, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan sent boxers to the 2nd edition of the Elorda Cup. Nine contests took place in the men’s light welterweight (63.5kg), light middleweight (71kg) and light heavyweight (80kg) in the first competition day following the Opening Ceremony.
Kazakhstan’s Sultan Mussinov impressed in the Thailand Open one year ago and his skills were enough to win all of the three rounds against India’s 21-year-old Ankit Narwal at the light welterweight (63.5kg).
Kazakhstan’s ASBC Asian Youth Champion Mukhammedsabyr Bazarbay Uulu was not only better than Talgat Syrymbetov, but his strength decided their contest in the second round. Kazakhstan’s third big hope at the light welterweight (63.5kg), Yertugan Zeinullinov knocked out Yerassyl Tankay in the first round.
Uzbekistan’s Nurislom Ismoilov lost his opener but his teammate, the ASBC Asian Boxing Championships competitor Khavasbek Asadullayev eliminated Kazakhstan’s 2021 Youth World Champion Sabyrzhan Akkalykov at the light middleweight (71kg).
Kazakhstan’s Talgat Shaikenov returned to the sport and he bowed out Tajikistan’s Khurshed Usvaliyev at the light middleweight (71kg). His teammate, Yerassyl Zhakpekov defeated another boxer from Tajikistan, Shakhboz Khaitov at the light heavyweight (80kg) on Day1.
The Elorda Cup is one of the top preparation events before the Asian Games which will be starting in Hangzhou, China on September 23.
