Sushma Tamang and Minu Gurung won the most anticipated finals at the Nepal Asian Games Final Selection Tournament

Following the Asian Games Pre-Selection Tournament, Nepal arranged their final event in order to select the best boxers for the upcoming multisport event. The Nepal Asian Games Final Selection Tournament confirmed six female and seven male winners including their local stars as Sushma Tamang and Minu Gurung.

The competition was the last and final selection tournament for the Asian Games which will be held in Hangzhou, China starting from September 23. Nepal arranged several national competitions already in 2023 to find the best line-ups for the Asian Games which will be the first qualifier for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Nepal has three excellent boxers at the women’s light flyweight (50kg) but only one of them has the chance to represent the country in the Asian Games. Sushma Tamang, their historic ASBC Asian U22 Boxing Championships silver medallist, had a tight but successful final against experienced national team members, Asmita Duwal.

The ASBC Grand Slam silver medallist Minu Gurung moved up to the bantamweight (54kg) and she faced for the title against Anjani Teli, another hero in Nepal’s boxing. The latter was quarter-finalist in the Women’s World Boxing Championships this March but Gurung had the extra finish to beat her in one of the most anticipated contests of the Final Selection Tournament.

Chandrakala Thapa is Nepal’s best female hope at the women’s featherweight (57kg) who dominated all of the three rounds against Nisha Tamang in the final. The experienced Sangita Sunar walker over to the title of the women’s lightweight (60kg), while Binita Thapa Magar (66kg) and veteran Saraswati Rana Magar (75kg) were the further female winners.

Rabin Thapa represented Nepal in the last two editions of the Men’s World Boxing Championships and he had the skills to beat Chandra Bahadur Thapa in the narrow final of the men’s flyweight (51kg). Buddha Gyamjo Lama is Nepal’s new featherweight (57kg) ace while Bhupendra Thapa Magar had the routine to dominate his light welterweight (63.5kg) final against Mausam Rana Magar.

Dipesh Lama accomplished his goal at the light middleweight (71kg) but Bharat Chand was a competitive opponent for him. Deepak Shrestha is a veteran boxer who moved up to the light heavyweight (80kg) but will be able to represent Nepal in the Asian Games. Deepak Sunwar (92kg) and the strong Ashish Dawadi (+92kg) dominated the heavier weight classes in the selection event.
