The first Syed Abdul Kadir Boxing Championships will take place in Singapore this September

The first edition of the Syed Abdul Kadir Boxing Championships will be Singapore’s main competition in 2023. The competition is a new in their boxing schedule and agenda which will be held in September 2023.

One of the experienced Asian ITOs and officials, Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir is the President of the Singapore Boxing Federation since long time but unfortunately he has a serious illness. The management of Singapore Boxing decided to launch a new competition under his name to introduce his amazing boxing career to the new generations.

The Singapore Boxing Federation was established in 1929 and it is one of the oldest Asian National Boxing Federations which is responsible for the small country’s boxing life. The Singaporeans competed in the recent ASBC Boxing Championships, Southeast Asian Games and other international events.

There are only a few hundreds of female and male boxers in Singapore in all age groups but the Southeast Asian country has national championships, and their athletes are active in all of the regional competitions as well.

Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir was active in the international boxing between 1970 and 1977 and following his impressive results, he became Singapore’s best boxer until today. Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir represented his country in the smallest category, at the light flyweight (48kg) in the 1970s.

He claimed a gold medal in the 1971 Southeast Asian Games, and reached the finals also in the 1973 and 1975 editions. Singapore’s boxing icon won his first preliminary bout at the Munich 1972 Olympic Games and only a Cuban boxer, Rafael Carbonell was able to stop him in the Round of 32.

He bagged a fantastic bronze at the 1974 Commonwealth Games which was his nation’s first ever boxing medal in the event’s history. Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir competed at the Tehran 1974 Asian Games and he earned a bronze medal at the 1975 Asian Boxing Championships in Yokohama, Japan. Following his career, he worked as coach and official in Singapore.

The management of the Asian Boxing Confederation wishes a quick recovery to the President of Singapore Boxing, Mr. Syed Abdul Kadir.
